Kate Hudson Fires Back at Mike Sardina’s Son Over Monsters Remark
Kate Hudson sidestepped the backlash over Song Sung Blue, declining to weigh in as Michael Sardina Jr., son of the late musician Mike Sardina, continues to argue the biopic damages his father’s legacy.
Kate Hudson is staying out of the mud-slinging over her new musical biopic Song Sung Blue. The film pairs her with Hugh Jackman and tells the story of late musician Mike Sardina. The loudest critic so far? Sardina's son, Michael Jr., who has been publicly torching the movie and the people promoting it. Hudson's response: a polite sidestep.
Hudson keeps it brief, defers to the filmmakers
Asked by The Hollywood Reporter about Michael Jr.'s 'monsters' remark aimed at the film's press tour, Hudson basically said she is not the one to hash this out. She framed it as respect for the people who made the movie and kept her own take off the table.
'Honestly, I don’t even know. Out of respect for our filmmakers, I’m not the right person to speak to it.'
She did add one personal note: she met the real-life Claire Sardina and came away impressed, saying Claire is wonderful and happy with the movie.
What Michael Sardina Jr. is angry about
Michael Jr. has been on a sustained tear against Song Sung Blue. He has called the film a pack of lies and says it trashes the legacy his father spent a lifetime building. In a Daily Mail interview, he argued the movie has 'completely destroyed' that legacy, said he wants the truth told with dignity, and even used the word retribution. He also claimed his father would be 'rolling in his grave.'
On top of that, Michael Jr. is upset that neither Hudson nor Jackman acknowledged him during the press tour. He says he was a central figure in his father's life, insists no one reached out to him for context, and argues they could have easily gone through writer-director Craig Brewer for more information. For what it is worth, he has admitted some viewers found the movie touching, even as he dismisses it as inaccurate.
The players and where they stand
- Kate Hudson: Stars in Song Sung Blue; declined to weigh in on the controversy beyond deferring to the filmmakers; says Claire Sardina is happy with the film.
- Hugh Jackman: Co-stars alongside Hudson; was lumped into Michael Jr.'s 'monsters' comment about the publicity circuit.
- Michael Sardina Jr.: Son of the late Mike Sardina; says the film is untrue, damages his father's legacy, and that the team never contacted him; wants the 'true story' and retribution.
- Claire Sardina: Met with Hudson; described by Hudson as a wonderful person who is pleased with the movie.
- Mike 'Lightning' Sardina: The late musician whose life the movie dramatizes.
- Craig Brewer: Wrote and directed Song Sung Blue; the person Michael Jr. says Hudson and Jackman could have asked for more information.
The movie itself
Song Sung Blue is written and directed by Craig Brewer and premiered in the United States on December 25, 2025. The behind-the-scenes friction around the film seems unlikely to cool off soon, but Hudson, at least, is clearly choosing not to fuel it.
