Kaitlyn Dever is fired up for The Last of Us Season 3, and her enthusiasm is already stoking fan buzz for the next chapter.

The Last of Us is one of the rare game-to-TV adaptations that actually sticks the landing. The HBO series has mostly hugged the source material with only small deviations, and even if you know what’s coming, the Joel and Ellie story (Pedro Pascal and Bella Ramsey) still hits like a truck. Season 3, though, is lining up to feel different — on purpose.

Season 3 shifts the spotlight to Abby

The next chapter will be told largely — maybe even entirely — from Abby’s perspective, played by Kaitlyn Dever. If you played The Last of Us Part 2, you know the move: the game makes you spend real time with Abby, not just as an antagonist, but as a lead. Expect the show to do the same.

Dever told Deadline she’s not just ready for the heavier lift — she’s already gearing up for it.

'I’m getting mentally and physically prepped right now. I go up in a couple of days, actually, to start prep over there. I’m so excited to kind of take on a much bigger role in the season.'

Where Season 2 left us

Season 2 ended on a cliffhanger tied to Ellie’s fate and a very angry Abby. Then the finale pulled the camera back and closed on a flashback from Abby’s point of view, set a few days before that confrontation. Translation: the show is already laying the track to follow Abby next season, the way the game split control between Ellie and Abby.

Why the perspective flip matters

In the game, once you’re living with Abby — seeing her context, her losses, her logic — she stops reading as a straight-up villain. You might not agree with her, but her choices become understandable, sometimes even justified. Dever thinks the series is about to pull off the same trick.

'The fans are really going to like it, I think, the shifting perspective onto Abby, getting some more context onto her storyline and going back in time with this season. So, I’m very excited for the fans to see it.'

It’ll be fascinating to see the reaction. Remember, when Part 2 dropped, plenty of players were furious about Joel’s fate and the hard swap to Abby. Over time, a lot of the fandom warmed to her. The show now gets to navigate that same curve — with the benefit of hindsight and two seasons of goodwill.

What you need to know right now

  • Season 3 is getting closer to production; Kaitlyn Dever says she heads out in a couple of days to start prep and is stepping into a significantly bigger role as Abby.
  • The story will largely track Abby’s side of Part 2, continuing the show’s habit of staying close to the game while tweaking the edges.
  • Season 2 ended by priming Abby’s backstory with a flashback that reframed the cliffhanger involving Ellie.
  • You can stream Seasons 1 and 2 on HBO Max; plans start at $10.99/month if you need a refresher before Season 3 lands.

And after Season 3?

That’s the other big question. There’s no The Last of Us Part Three game out there to adapt, and there’s not much sign one is deep in development. That doesn’t guarantee the show ends after Season 3 — the series is a hit, and HBO is not allergic to more of a good thing — but for now, the future beyond Abby’s season is a big shrug.
