Julia Quinn fans will be happy, the Bridgerton star assures.

Everyone knows that Shonda Rhimes' hit show Bridgerton is based on Julia Quinn's historical romance series, and everyone knows that the iconic showrunner hasn't been shy about tweaking and adjusting the source material for her adaptation. The Regency society, the characters and their storylines, even the order of the Bridgerton siblings' love stories have been changed to make Rhimes' Bridgerverse a more modern and relatable place.

While such an approach creates a certain intrigue for fans of Quinn's romance novels, it also makes them a little nervous about how the beloved stories and couples are put in jeopardy in the adaptation. If this is the case for you, Nicola Coughlan has good news — there's no need to worry about the upcoming season starring her and Luke Newton as Penelope Featherington and Colin Bridgerton.

'[Season 3] is really special and it stays very true to the books,' Coughlan told People during Netflix's Tudum event.

The actress, who is a noted fan of the Bridgerverse, added that her co-star's performance was 'amazing' and the whole atmosphere on set was unparalleled.

'We had one of the best times filming it and it's one of the best experiences I've ever had, for sure,' she said.

As in Quinn's book, Penelope and Colin's on-screen love story will be a classic friends-to-lovers trope mixed with the challenges posed by Pen's secret identity as Lady Whistledown. After a falling-out with her best friend Eloise and her childhood crush Colin, Penelope decides to take matters into her own hands and find a suitable husband who'll give her a measure of freedom.

'She's like a woman on a mission. She's ready to go, ready to launch herself out into the marriage market in a new way. She wants a whole new look, and she gets it,' Coughlan explained.

In addition to a new glow-up look, the mission gives Pen a new twist in her relationship with Colin, which the actress says is set to be the most romantic ride of the series yet.

'I think Season 1 was about passion, Season 2 was about longing, and Season 3, I think it's romance all the way,' Coughlan said. 'There were a lot of moments on set where we filmed something and we'd turn around and everyone was sort of clutching their chest being like "Oh my God." It was that kind of love.'

Well, we are certainly ready for that kind of love. Bring it on.
