Juror #2 and 4 Other Courtroom Movies With 90% and Higher Rotten Tomatoes Scores
Stories of obsession, injustice, and the subjectivity of truth.
In the cinema, as in life, legal proceedings consist of certain stages. Judges, jurors, lawyers, defendants, witnesses and other participants become the directors of courtroom dramas.
Our list includes courtroom movies that show the legal battlefield from different angles.
1. Red Rooms, 2023
Rotten Tomatoes Score: 95%
Ludovic Chevalier is accused of torturing and brutally murdering three schoolgirls, the atrocities were broadcast live in the "red rooms" of the darknet.
As the camera pans around the courtroom, the lawyer and prosecutor take turns speaking, and the defendant peers out of a glass box, director Pascal Plante studies the spectators of the trial – two girls who, for different reasons, cannot stay away from the high-profile case.
The cyber-courtroom drama takes apart humanity's morbid obsession with serial killers. It's a reason to remember the fans of Charles Manson and Ted Bundy, and to reflect on the growing popularity of true crime.
2. Juror #2, 2024
Rotten Tomatoes Score: 92%
Clint Eastwood made the movie in his best tradition – with the same care and professionalism with which he made the major directorial hits of the 90s. Juror #2 is a courtroom drama in which the outcome is not as important as the formulation of the moral dilemma.
An exemplary family man, Justin Kemp, is one of the jurors in the trial of the culprit of an accident. Gradually, the man realizes that he himself was involved in the accident that resulted in the death of a person. Justin must save the falsely accused defendant while avoiding the threat of prosecution.
3. 12 Angry Men, 1957
Rotten Tomatoes Score: 100%
Twelve people are gathered in a closed room and must come to a unanimous decision, no easy task on any subject. This time, a dozen are debating first-degree murder. They must decide whether the defendant will be sent to the electric chair.
Some of the jurors have tickets to the night game, some have no opinion. And some have served on juries so many times that they make their decisions without raising an eyebrow.
The result of the first vote: 11 "guilty" to one "not guilty." Until all the jurors are on the same side, a verdict cannot be reached, so a heated argument begins.
4. Anatomy of a Fall, 2023
Rotten Tomatoes Score: 96%
Writer Sandra lives with her husband Samuel and their 11-year-old son far from the hustle and bustle of the city – in the snowy Alps. Their peace is shattered one sunny day when Samuel is found dead near their home.
Sandra is accused of the crime, and a public dissection of their family life begins. In an attempt to determine what happened – murder, suicide or accident – the court examines not only evidence and facts, but also quotes from fiction.
It is a courtroom drama in which a visually impaired boy – the son of the deceased and the accused – becomes a guide, a key witness and an unnamed judge. Through his optics and his inability to see a clear image, Justine Triet demonstrates the subjectivity of truth.
5. In the Name of the Father, 1993
Rotten Tomatoes Score: 94%
Jim Sheridan's movie tells the story of the Guildford Four, four men who were wrongly convicted of bombing several pubs in Guildford. Daniel Day-Lewis plays Gerry Conlon, one of those who endured the hell of injustice.
In preparation for filming, the actor spent three days in solitary confinement without water. He was also known to force the crew to pour cold water on him whenever they passed by. In addition, Daniel lost 50 pounds to better fit his character.
