Jennifer Lawrence Reveals Online Trolls Derailed Her Once Upon a Time in Hollywood Role
Jennifer Lawrence says online trolls cost her the chance to play Sharon Tate in Quentin Tarantino’s Once Upon a Time in Hollywood, a coveted role that ultimately went to Margot Robbie.
So, here's an odd bit of Hollywood 'what if': Jennifer Lawrence says she almost played Sharon Tate in Quentin Tarantino's Once Upon a Time in Hollywood—but according to her, internet trolls might've killed her shot at it.
Jennifer Lawrence vs. the Internet
Jennifer Lawrence popped up on the Happy Sad Confused podcast recently (shoutout to host Josh Horowitz), and things got interesting when her connection to Tarantino came up. Apparently, Tarantino asked Lawrence about playing Sharon Tate in Once Upon a Time in Hollywood. She confirmed it: 'He did.'
But then, Lawrence dropped this little bomb:
'And then everybody is like she's not pretty enough to play Sharon Tate. And then they didn't.'
The audience actually gasped at that one. When Horowitz seemed skeptical, Lawrence explained a bit more. She admitted she might be misremembering or, as she put it, 'It's that thing where I've been telling this story this way for so long that I believe it.' But then again, she thinks that's pretty much what went down: maybe the internet backlash, maybe just Tarantino deciding differently—but either way, Margot Robbie ended up with the part.
She kept things dryly funny as usual, joking about the 'sweetie pies' of the internet, after Horowitz sarcastically suggested the web would never be that mean. (Yeah, sure.)
The Actual Movie
To jog your memory, Once Upon a Time in Hollywood is set in 1969 and puts Leonardo DiCaprio and Brad Pitt front and center as a faded TV actor and his longtime stunt double, swirling around the lead-up to the Manson Family murders and the death of Sharon Tate. The film also packs in Timothy Olyphant, Al Pacino, Austin Butler, and Rafał Zawierucha alongside Margot Robbie as Tate.
Lawrence & Tarantino: Near Misses
Turns out, Once Upon a Time... isn't the only Tarantino gig Lawrence almost landed. She also said she turned down the role of Daisy Domergue in Tarantino's The Hateful Eight (2015). And she admits, 'I should not have done that.' The part went to Jennifer Jason Leigh instead, earning her an Oscar nomination. Chalk that up as one of those career alternate timeline moments.
Who Ended Up In These Tarantino Roles?
- Sharon Tate: Margot Robbie (Once Upon a Time in Hollywood)
- Daisy Domergue: Jennifer Jason Leigh (The Hateful Eight)
So, if you ever thought Jennifer Lawrence would've made for a different Once Upon a Time... (and, honestly, it'd be a much weirder movie), maybe point some blame at online comments sections. Or maybe not. Classic Hollywood: nothing is ever simple.
