John Boyega Reveals The One Thing Star Trek Does Better Than Star Wars
Golden Globe winner John Boyega says Star Trek does one thing better than Star Wars — and he would know. The Finn actor, last seen rising to Resistance general in 2019’s The Rise of Skywalker, breaks down the key difference between the sci-fi giants.
John Boyega took a break from swinging lightsabers to talk about, of all things, Star Trek. At Dragon Con, the Golden Globe winner and former stormtrooper-turned-Resistance hero broke down what he thinks Trek does better than Wars, why he is not jumping ship, and what that might mean for Finn down the road.
Boyega on Trek vs. Wars
Boyega was pretty blunt: he does not see himself popping up in a Star Trek project, mostly out of loyalty to Star Wars. That said, he also thinks the other space franchise has a strength Star Wars could borrow.
'In Star Trek, they give you time to have discussions. I think there is something Star Wars can learn from that, actually.'
His read is simple and kind of funny: in Trek, characters stop to talk through the big ideas; in Star Wars, everyone is mid-mission, mid-chase, mid-explosion, and the conversation has to happen while blasters are firing. He even joked that on the Trek side fans like to talk about it, while on the Star Wars side 'we just get active.'
Despite past frustrations with how Lucasfilm handled Finn, Boyega made it clear he is still firmly in the Star Wars camp. As he put it, he has to 'stay on team' and he is a 'lightsaber guy.'
Quick Finn refresher
If you forgot where we left him: Finn was last seen in 2019's The Rise of Skywalker. By the end, after Leia's death, he and Poe Dameron were promoted to generals for the Resistance.
So is Finn coming back?
Daisy Ridley is officially returning as Rey in the next Star Wars movie, which kicked off the obvious question: is Boyega coming back too? Nothing is confirmed, but here is what is actually locked in right now:
- Director: Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy
- Writer: Steven Knight (creator of Peaky Blinders)
- Timeline: Set about 15 years after The Rise of Skywalker
- Status: Plot, cast beyond Ridley, and release date are all still under wraps
Bottom line: Boyega is not switching to Starfleet, but he is not wrong about Trek taking a beat to talk things through. If Star Wars finds room for a little of that energy in the post-TROS era, Finn would be a great character to benefit from it.
