The Big Bang Theory aired for 12 seasons, and during that time, the sitcom's fan base only grew larger and more devoted.

Viewers seemed to love everything about the beloved show, from the unique premise and hilarious jokes to the wonderful chemistry and brilliant performances of the cast. And the ratings reflected that love.

That's why everyone was shocked to learn that the sitcom would be ending after its 12th season. Fans took to social media to voice their disagreement with the creators' decision and demand at least a few more seasons.

But there was no coming back. Jim Parsons was determined to leave the sitcom.

After 12 years on the show, the actor felt it was time to move on. Not only did The Big Bang Theory help him launch his career and win four Emmys, but it also made Parsons one of the richest celebrities in the world, which gave him the rare opportunity to pick and choose the projects he wanted.

And Chuck Lorre understandably decided that The Big Bang Theory could not go on without its lead character. Both Parsons' and Lorre's announcements came as filming for the final season had already begun, and shocked the cast. The cast didn't take it lightly. There were many tears and emotions, but when the storm subsided, the cast acknowledged that it was the right time to say goodbye.

In fact, Parsons wasn't the only star ready to leave The Big Bang Theory. A few months before the news of the show's cancellation, Johnny Galecki hinted that Season 12 might be the last. He said during the Television Critics Association winter press tour that ending the show would be very sad for the cast, but it would also be nice to get some time off.

"I think at this point everyone's very comfortable with 12 seasons being a good time to go home and see our families," were his exact words.

Also, Jessica Radloff's book about The Big Bang Theory, published last year, revealed that Simon Helberg was the only main cast member who knew about Parsons' departure in advance. And he was willing to leave if the show continued without Parsons.

"It was time to say goodbye. I think that's a healthy thing," the actor told TV Line. "It feels like we've said all we could say."
