Jennifer Lawrence Crowns Emma Stone the Muppet-Head Driving Their Miss Piggy Movie, Calls Herself the Ideas Guy
At long last, The Muppets’ scene-stealing queen is taking center stage in her own big-screen adventure.
As the Muppets hit the big 7-0, Hollywood finally seems ready to give them the spotlight again. Case in point: Jennifer Lawrence and Emma Stone are cooking up a Miss Piggy movie. Yes, Miss Piggy finally getting her own feature. About time.
Lawrence and Stone are in Piggy mode
Lawrence laid out how this partnership works during a stop on The Tonight Show: Stone is the hardcore Muppet person, and Lawrence is the one tossing out ideas until something sticks. The script is coming from writer-performer Cole Escola, which is a great fit if you know their sensibility.
"Emma Stone is the Muppet-head. Also, Emma Stone is a shark. I'm, just like, the ideas guy. So, I went to her to be like, 'What do we do?' So, now Cole [Escola] is writing it, and they're perfect."
Where the idea came from
Lawrence says the seed was planted back in 2020-2021, during lockdowns, when everyone was arguing about cancel culture. In a conversation with a friend, the words 'Miss Piggy is a feminist icon' came up, followed by the mischievous what-if: what if Miss Piggy got canceled? Lawrence stressed that is not literally the plot, but that thought experiment kicked the whole thing into gear. Honestly, that angle is bold and very Piggy.
Why this actually matters
Miss Piggy has been a star for decades, but usually from the Kermit-adjacent lane. This would be her first time fronting a feature all by herself. For context, here is Piggy's early run:
- 1974: Debuts on a Herb Alpert TV special
- 1975: Pops up in the TV one-off 'The Muppet Show: Sex and Violence' (yes, that was the title)
- 1976: Joins the main cast for Season 1 of The Muppet Show and basically never leaves the center of the action
Since then, she has been the loud, lovable, self-styled diva who alternates between Kermit's partner and his chaos agent. Icon behavior, rarely a lead role. That seems to be changing.
Who is in it and what else is brewing
Both Stone and Lawrence want to pop up in the movie themselves. Meanwhile, there is a second Muppets thing on the way: Seth Rogen is producing a mystery special for Disney Plus, with an eye toward reviving the variety-show vibe if it works.
Call me cautiously optimistic. If Piggy is finally getting her crown, I am absolutely here for it.
