Illumination is stacking the deck for Minions & Monsters, enlisting Jeff Bridges, Allison Janney, Jesse Eisenberg, Zoey Deutch, and more to headline the prequel’s star-packed voice cast.

Sound the bee-do alarm. The Minions are suiting up again, and this time they are bringing movie monsters with them. Universal and Illumination just revealed the next chapter, 'Minions & Monsters,' sliding into theaters on July 1, 2026, with a stacked voice cast and a throwback Hollywood hook.

The voice cast

Where this fits

'Minions & Monsters' wedges itself neatly between chapters: it is a prequel to 2010's 'Despicable Me' and a sequel to 2022's 'Minions: The Rise of Gru.'

The premise

We are headed to 1920s Hollywood, where the yellow agents of chaos scramble to cast the lead of their own monster movie. The studio is calling the adventure 'rambunctious, ridiculous, and totally true,' charting how the Minions crash the entertainment business, become bona fide movie stars, then lose everything, accidentally unleash real monsters on the world, and ultimately band together to clean up the mess and save the planet.

The team behind it

Pierre Coffin returns to direct. If the name rings a bell, it should: he steered the first three 'Despicable Me' films and the original 'Minions,' and he is once again the voice behind the little yellow troublemakers.

Illumination founder Chris Meledandri sounds very pleased with the mayhem-to-be:

'The Minions have always had a wonderfully subversive spirit and "Minions & Monsters" delivers a full dose of irreverence and comedic mayhem.'

'The film's story is unexpected and delightful, and perhaps the most lovely surprise is how "Minions & Monsters" serves to honor cinema, its origins and the comedians who are the original inspiration for these adorable little guys.'

The Minions are Gru's sugar-fueled helpers from the 'Despicable Me' series, popular enough to headline their own films and even snag an interactive ride at Universal Studios Florida.

Quick take

My mild annoyance with these gibberish-speaking gremlins has turned into actual fondness. The slapstick still packs that classic cartoon thump, and Jeff Bridges in the booth is always a good idea. Curious to see how deep into old-school Hollywood the franchise goes this time.

'Minions & Monsters' opens in theaters July 1, 2026.
