Suit up for liberty: Jason Momoa drops into Sony’s Helldivers as the big-screen game adaptation takes shape, with action maestro Justin Lin directing the mission.

Suit up, citizens. Sony is turning Helldivers into a movie, and they are not shy about the satire. Jason Momoa is onboard to star, Justin Lin is calling the shots, and the studio planted a flag on a very specific date.

The mission brief

  • Star: Jason Momoa
  • Director: Justin Lin
  • Release date: November 10, 2027
  • Producers: Lin via Perfect Storm Entertainment, Hutch Parker, and PlayStation Productions duo Asad Qizilbash and Carter Swan

What story are we storming into?

Helldivers follows an elite drop-in, blow-everything-up outfit tasked with protecting humanity across hostile worlds while exporting, ahem, managed democracy. Think propaganda reels, recruitment posters, and a very sharp wink. The games have always leaned into that vibe with gusto, and the comparisons to Paul Verhoeven-style sci-fi aren’t accidental.

On the ground, it is all about teamwork. You call in stratagems, survive waves of enemies, and try not to crush your squadmate with a resupply Hellpod. The foes are delightfully blunt: swarming Bugs, implacable Cyborgs, and the Illuminate, each requiring different tactics and plenty of panic.

Lin’s angle

Word is Lin was drawn to the chance to build out the world beyond the mission brief. He is approaching this less like a straight run-and-gun and more like a character-forward, timely riff on duty, propaganda, and what it takes to keep a squad together when everything is on fire. He is also producing, which tells you he wants his fingerprints on the tone and the myth-making.

Why this is happening now

The first Helldivers hit back in 2015 and did well, but 2024’s Helldivers 2 blew the doors off. The sequel swapped the original’s top-down camera for a third-person, over-the-shoulder meat grinder and never looked back. It has stuck around too, with daily concurrent players topping 100,000 and a community that treats every drop like a small war story. Hollywood noticed.

Momoa’s dance card

Momoa just rolled out The Wrecking Crew on Prime Video, a buddy action comedy that pairs him with Dave Bautista as half-brothers digging into their father’s death and the family mess under it. Before Helldivers lands, he is suiting up as Lobo opposite Milly Alcock’s Kara Zor-El in DC Studios’ Supergirl, and he is set to go green as Blanka in a Street Fighter movie directed by Kitao Sakurai. If you somehow missed Aquaman or the Minecraft adventure he has on the resume, you have time to catch up.

The vibe check

If this movie embraces the franchise’s gleeful boot-on-the-asteroid satire and squad-level mayhem, we might get a rare big-budget bug hunt that is both rowdy and razor-edged. Mark the date, pack extra stratagems, and maybe don’t stand under the resupply beacon on November 10, 2027.
