If you put aside the many pairings formed in the early seasons of Grey's Anatomy and ask fans about who their favorite couple is, you'll most likely get the same answer over and over again: Jackson Avery and April Kepner, also known as Japril.

Both characters first appeared on the show in season six during the merger of Mercy West Medical Center and Seattle Grace Hospital.

Soon enough, viewers noticed that the two had undeniable on-screen chemistry and longed for the good ol' friends-to-lovers trope. So when the couple finally kissed and had sex in season eight, fans were ecstatic.

The steamy start of their relationship was deepened by the couple's differences in their morals, beliefs, and values.

April was very religious and a virgin who grew up on a farm, while Jackson came from a wealthy family and didn't believe in any religion. It was perfect for a quick fling, but in the long run, Japril seemed doomed.

While viewers wanted to see Jackson and April together, the writers seemed to have no idea what to do with this pairing — and that's how Japril ended up having the most confusing love story on Grey's Anatomy.

Too many tragic storylines were thrown in their way, and April and Jackson just didn't get any time to be a normal, cute, happy couple.

While the chemistry between them didn't go anywhere, drama and conflict seemed to have become the core of their relationship, as the couple's every step and decision required a fight or a lot of convincing. As a result, the two characters rarely looked happy together, and many fans were sad to note that their relationship had become toxic.

At the same time, both Jackson and April have gone through tremendous personal and professional growth during their time on the show, and all the trauma they experienced did not break them but helped them evolve. Moreover, no matter how complicated their relationship had been, they never seemed to have lost love for each other.

Viewers find that even the ending of their love arc was confusing.

April left Grey Sloan Memorial Hospital in season 14 after marrying her other love interest, Matthew. But after Jackson left the show three seasons later, it was revealed that April got divorced, followed him to Boston, and the two later rekindled their relationship.

Looks like Japril works better behind the camera than on screen.
