James Gunn is keeping the DCU in overdrive, stacking projects even as the future remains uncertain.

With Peacemaker season 2 finally wrapped, James Gunn has a little space to breathe. Not that he plans to. Even while running DC Studios with Peter Safran and shepherding the whole franchise, he says he still wants to get behind the camera for a few more DCU projects.

So, is Gunn directing more DCU stuff?

"There's a plan that I'm going to do a couple more, at least."

That was Gunn during a Peacemaker season 2 press conference, per Deadline, when someone asked if he would direct again. Short answer: yes. Longer answer: he isn't naming all the projects yet.

The Superman of it all

  • Back in 2022, when Gunn and Safran unveiled their revamped DCU, Gunn also confirmed he was writing and directing Superman.
  • He made that while also getting Peacemaker season 2 done. Busy is an understatement.
  • As of now, outside of his producer duties across the slate, the only other DC project he's actively working on is the Superman sequel.
  • One of those "couple more" directing gigs is the follow-up to Superman, titled Man of Tomorrow.

Given that his take on Clark is basically the tone-setter for this whole DCU era, it makes sense he wants to steer the next chapter himself. Think of how he guarded the vibe of Guardians of the Galaxy over at Marvel — same idea here.

What else could he grab?

That's where it gets fuzzy. He could swing toward the Bat-family. He could go way more niche. But a lot of the announced DCU projects already have writers or directors attached, and Gunn tends to like doing both on the ones he shepherds personally. Translation: he's likely handing many of those to other filmmakers while he picks his spots.

Also, he's very aware of burnout

"I may get so fucking tired that I can't do it, because I'm pretty tired, but we'll see."

Fair. Running a studio and making cape stuff at the same time isn't exactly a restful hobby. For now, pencil him in for at least a couple more directing turns — with Man of Tomorrow on deck — and leave some room for the possibility of a well-earned nap.
