James Gunn Confirms Talks With Keanu Reeves for Constantine 2 — But He Hasn't Read a Script Yet

DC Studios co-chief James Gunn says he has discussed a Constantine sequel with Keanu Reeves, reigniting hopes for the demon hunter’s big-screen return.
Constantine 2 refuses to die. James Gunn says he has actually talked to Keanu Reeves about it, which sounds promising. But there is a catch: Gunn still has not read a script.
Where things stand
"I have discussed it on and off. I have discussed it with Keanu. But I have not read any script yet."
That is Gunn, the DC Studios boss, talking to BobaTalks. Translation: the conversation is real, but the project is not at the start line yet.
How we got here
- 2022: Talk of a Constantine sequel kicked up again.
- Late 2024: Word came that a first draft was in, which sounded like progress.
- Earlier this year: Peter Stormare, who played Lucifer in the original, said there has been a lot of back and forth and that Keanu was not happy with the scripts.
The creative tug-of-war
Stormare also laid out what he thinks the sequel should be: keep it grounded, not a CG shootout factory. He said the first film took a while to become a cult favorite, and if they let the mood and texture breathe again, it will click with audiences. His plea, in short: do not blow it up into a massive superhero spectacle, do not wire everyone into the ceiling, and do not turn it into non-stop gunplay. Let Constantine be Constantine.
The original, in case you need a quick refresher
The 2005 DC Comics adaptation starred Keanu Reeves as John Constantine, a chain-smoking, deeply cynical exorcist who teams with a detective to investigate her sister's suspicious death. It was not a monster hit at the time, but it found its fans and settled into cult status over the years, which is exactly why a sequel keeps coming up.
So, are we closer?
Sort of. Gunn has spoken to Keanu, which matters. But with no script in his hands, it is still development limbo. If Reeves is pushing for a version that feels like the first film and not a superhero arms race, that is a good sign for the tone. Now they just need a script everyone actually likes.
