It’s Official: Aaron Sorkin Just Dropped The Social Network Sequel Title And Release Date

Aaron Sorkin logs back into Facebook as The Social Network sequel locks in a title and release date.
So, yes, we’re actually doing this: Aaron Sorkin is making a sequel to The Social Network. New title, new Zuck, and a real release date. Sony made it official, so go ahead and brace for impact.
What Sony just locked in
The sequel is titled The Social Reckoning and it hits theaters October 9, 2026. Sorkin is both writing and directing for Sony Pictures.
Who’s playing who
- Jeremy Strong (Succession) as Mark Zuckerberg — yes, a new Zuck
- Mikey Madison (Anora) as whistle-blower Frances Haugen
- Jeremy Allen White (The Bear) as Jeff Horwitz, the Wall Street Journal reporter whose series cracked open Facebook’s inner workings and global fallout
- Bill Burr (The Mandalorian) is also in the cast; role not announced
What this one’s actually about
This isn’t a victory lap. The story zeroes in on what Facebook’s own internal research said about the platform’s impact — specifically how it harmed teens and kids — and how the company knew misinformation was spreading and fueling real-world violence. The film is also expected to wade into Facebook’s role leading up to and around Jan. 6, 2021. And the scope isn’t just domestic; it will look at the platform’s influence on preteens and teens and the way it has shaped events well beyond U.S. borders.
The Fincher question (aka the inside baseball part)
Back in 2020, Sorkin said he’d only write a sequel if David Fincher came back to direct. His words, not mine:
"Do I want to write that movie? Yeah I do. I will only write it if [David Fincher] directs it. If Billy Wilder came back from the grave and said he wanted to direct it, I’d say I’d only do it with David."
Cut to now: Sorkin’s in the director’s chair himself. Not the outcome he swore by, but he’s got more reps behind the camera than he did back then, with Molly’s Game, The Trial of the Chicago 7, and Being the Ricardos on his résumé.
Quick refresher on the original’s hardware
The Social Network went into the 83rd Academy Awards with eight nominations, including Best Picture, Best Director, and Best Actor, and walked away with three wins — one of them for Sorkin’s screenplay.
Bottom line: The Social Reckoning lands October 9, 2026. New cast, same Sorkin bite, and a target that’s only gotten bigger and messier since the first film. Should be a ride.
