Sony has reportedly sealed a deal to catapult global sensation Labubu onto the big screen, teeing up the viral phenomenon’s feature debut.

Of course Hollywood wants a movie about the latest must-have toy. After Barbie, the playbook is pretty clear: find a craze, scale it up. The next one on deck is Labubu. Sony is developing a feature based on the collectible critter, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

So... what is Labubu?

If you are not living in Labubu Land, here is the crash course: Labubu is a cutesy little monster with a posse of equally oddball friends. They come as pocket-size plush figures and trinkets people wear or clip to bags. They first showed up in 2015 and are sold in blind-box style packs from Chinese toymaker Pop Mart, which means you do not know which character you are getting until you open it. That lottery vibe fuels a big resale market for the rarer pulls.

How it went from niche to everywhere

The fad first bubbled up in Southeast Asia, then broke wide in 2024 when Lisa from K-pop group Blackpink — one of the most visible stars on the planet — started being seen with them in public. It was off to the races after that.

Is there an actual story?

Sort of. Labubu has a crew that includes Zymomo, Mokoko, and Tycoco. There is a light setup about their relationships and the playful worlds they hang out in, but it is more vibes than plot. Think character dynamics and cute environments, not lore you need a wiki for.

The messy side of the craze

With demand spiking, there have been reports of shoppers clashing in stores to grab new drops. Special editions have turned into status trophies, and the resale insanity has reached eye-watering heights — the rarest pieces have reportedly sold for as much as $170,000 USD.

About that movie

Details are thin. Sony is developing the Labubu film, but there is no timeline yet — no dates, nothing on cast, none of the usual specifics. Given how hot the brand is, it is not shocking a studio pounced. The only question now is what kind of story they wrap around a character whose whole appeal is the collectible hunt.
