It: Welcome to Derry Season 2 Leaps Years Ahead With a Massive Time Jump

Weeks before It: Welcome to Derry hits HBO, Andy and Barbara Muschietti are already teasing Season 2 — and it’s set to vault the story forward with a massive time jump that could reshape Derry’s nightmare all over again.
We are still a few weeks out from It: Welcome to Derry premiering, and Andy and Barbara Muschietti are already talking about Season 2. Not just talking, either: they are mapping out a big time jump. Bold move, especially since HBO hasn’t officially renewed the show yet.
So what are they planning?
The Muschiettis, who already steered the two It movies and are now shepherding this HBO prequel, say the series is designed as a larger, multi-season arc that digs deeper into the mythology and moves backward in time.
"There is an intentional bigger arc that will open. My intention with this was to create a story that is a little bit like an iceberg under the water all through Seasons 1, 2, and 3. There will be an expansion in the mythology and more answers to the big questions."
Andy Muschietti told Deadline that Season 2 is planned to jump to 1935. He also said the end of Season 1 will drop the breadcrumb that explains why they want to tell two more seasons — and why the story keeps pushing further back in time.
Where Season 1 starts
It: Welcome to Derry is a prequel to It and It: Chapter Two. Season 1 is set in 1962, centering on the Hanlon family arriving in Derry and digging into the early origins of Pennywise the Clown. Yes, Bill Skarsgard is back in the makeup, which feels essential if you’re going to do this right.
The renewal reality check
Just to keep expectations honest: HBO has not renewed It: Welcome to Derry for Season 2. The Muschiettis are clearly thinking long-term, but Season 2 is not greenlit yet.

The Muschiettis calling their three-season plan an iceberg is one of those behind-the-scenes tells: they’re building a framework to fill in King’s lore with new answers and a clear path backward through Derry’s history. Now we just have to see if Season 1 lands and if HBO lets them keep digging.
