The popular actor can do better than The Witcher.

While Netflix's The Witcher remains one of the most popular shows in the streaming giant's catalog, it became painfully clear that the series wasn't as great as it could have been even before the current third season premiered.

The original books by Andrzej Sapkowski and the iconic trilogy of The Witcher games are all complex fantasy stories that are perfectly capable of rivaling even George R. R. Martin's Game of Thrones, but Netflix's adaptation feels more like mindless action than compelling fantasy.

Nevertheless, fans have had one big reason to watch The Witcher's first three seasons — Henry Cavill's performance as Geralt. The actor clearly cared deeply about his role and the project, spending countless hours studying the source material and trying to please viewers with his take on the iconic character. And with Cavill leaving after the current season, some fans are ready to claim that The Witcher never deserved him as lead actor in the first place.

It was clear from the start that Cavill tried to put all his talent into the show, but Netflix was apparently not interested in that, turning the fantasy adaptation into an action-packed extravaganza, which really bothered both fans and the lead actor himself. According to some reports, The Witcher's creators weren't treating the source material seriously, and it looks like Cavill's decision to leave the show stems from his dissatisfaction with their uninspired approach to the adaptation.

'In interviews he went from super excited for S1 to not having much to say about S3 at all, and I can only imagine the mental toll it would take — to try so hard to retain the complexity of the novels when Netflix clearly wants Just-Another-Teen-Show,' one fan said.

Although it's incredibly sad that Henry Cavill won't be a part of The Witcher after Season 3, it's great that he can now go on to explore other career opportunities instead of wasting his time on a half-baked mess that Netflix's show has become. Also, there is still hope that Liam Hemsworth, who is set to play Geralt starting from Season 4, will approach the role with just as much care as Cavill did, hopefully changing the Netflix producers' attitude to the show.

The final three episodes of The Witcher Season 3 will arrive on Netflix on July 27, 2023.
