For some reason, animation is often associated with children. Indeed, who among us didn't enjoy cartoons as kids? However, there are numerous adult animated shows, such as Family Guy and American Dad!, that are not intended for children at all. Among these, Futurama has an undeniably fascinating history.

Debuting in 1999 on Fox, Futurama swiftly gained acclaim for its workplace humour and portrayal of misfits. Set in a whimsical future, this animated sitcom revolves around the often chaotic employees of Planet Express, a fictional delivery company, as they repeatedly land themselves in trouble. The show had a four-season stint on Fox before it was revived by Comedy Central six years later, running for an additional three seasons. This year saw the premiere of season 8 on Hulu.

Heaps of Pop Culture Humour

A hallmark of many adult animations is the relevance of their humour, and Futurama excels in this regard. From its beginnings, the series has woven in numerous references to pop culture and current events, often satirising subjects or personalities the writers found noteworthy. By season 8, however, some fans felt a sense of fatigue.

'Honestly, it's been a bit off-putting how each episode seems to be parodying something. Feels more like a South Park gimmick for the last ten plus years than normal Futurama,' a Redditor pointed out. 'I just want more random adventures with some small nods to real world stuff. Season 8 Worth Watching?

At the same, many agree that the latest season hasn't entirely missed the mark. It remains true to the show's essence. So, there's no compelling reason to give it a pass.

However, you want to temper your expectations if you plan on watching the eighth season. Most fans agree it only has two episodes that deliver outstanding humour: the premier and the Christmas special. Having said that, it's still interesting to watch a show that's been around for so long and is still going pretty strong.
