So it seems the studio is sticking to its commitment to revive the fan-favorite story.

With that in mind, it's no surprise that many fans are dreaming of a fourth installment in Sam Raimi's Spider-Man trilogy starring Tobey Maguire. The Sony Pictures/Marvel film series premiered in 2002 and became an instant classic, beloved by generations of Spider-Man fans. The three-part franchise is still widely regarded as the best adaptation of the Marvel comic books about the titular superhero. But given that the third installment was released in 2007, is a new movie even possible?

Tobey Maguire reprised his role as Spider-Man in the current MCU in 2021's Spider-Man: No Way Home, so it's entirely plausible that the actor could star in another superhero movie of his own. Of course, there's been a lot of chatter online that Marvel might be making a fourth Spider-Man movie in Sam Raimi's franchise, but the director himself doesn't seem so sure.

'Well, I haven't heard about that yet,' Sam Raimi recently commented on the continuation of his Spider-Man franchise. 'I did read [the rumors], but I'm not actually working on it yet. I mean, Marvel and Columbia are so successful with current Spider-Man [franchise], and the track there, and I don't know that they're going to go back to me, and say, "Well, folks, we can also tell that story!"'

As for not being asked to direct the potential movie with Tobey Maguire as Spider-Man, the director said that even though he hadn't talked to the actor about it, he was sure Marvel would let him know about any such plans. After all, Raimi directed Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness for the MCU and still has certain connections at the studio.

While the Spider-Man trilogy may be considered the pinnacle of Tobey Maguire's career, the actor has had some notable roles outside of the Marvel films. For example, he starred in and executive produced Babylon in 2022 and appeared on Apple TV+'s Extrapolations in 2023. Still, it's true that he hasn't had a role as successful as Spider-Man. So, it would definitely be another breakthrough for Maguire if the fourth Sam Raimi Spider-Man movie were made.
