The new season does the character no favors.

Arguably, Hallmark has never been the home of good shows and movies. Every production on the network is somewhat corny and ludicrous. That said, Hallmark still offers enough entertainment to draw in hundreds of thousands of viewers.

When Calls the Heart is perhaps a prime example of everything a Hallmark show stands for. Based on the Canadian West series of novels by Janette Oke, this soap opera has been around for nine years and has spanned an impressive ten seasons, the latest of which is currently airing. WCTH revolves around Elizabeth Thatcher, a young schoolteacher in a small town on the Canadian frontier, and features many likable but one-dimensional characters. One of them, however, is completely insufferable.

Annoying Naivete

Played by Pascale Hutton, Rosemary LeVeaux made her debut in the first season of When Calls the Heart in 2014. An eccentric and (slightly) self-centered actress from New York City, she moved to Hope Valley following her fiancé, Jack Thornton. Although their engagement was called off, she decided to stay. And so began her journey of annoying viewers.

Throughout WCTH's many seasons, Rosemary has changed many times. While she was indeed the show's most irritating character due to her naivete and nonchalance, Rosemary seemed to change for the better in the last few seasons. LaVeaux got more serious and mature, which the audience was happy to see. In season 10, however, she is as unbearable as ever.

The Show's Essence

On the one hand, it's admirable to see a character stay true to themselves. On the other hand, we think it's extremely unrealistic and boring when a person doesn't seem to change over the course of almost a decade.

In Season 10, Rosemary comes off as annoyingly simple-minded and somewhat reckless, and may very well epitomize When Calls the Heart as a whole. With that in mind, we couldn't help but wonder if we were asking too much of the Hallmark show?

Perhaps it should have been clear from the beginning that the writing wasn't When Calls the Heart's strongest point. Still, the show could have been better. Especially Rosemary could have had more depth in her personality.
