Netflix dropped all of Boots, and yes, the show actually kills a recruit. For a coming-of-age Marine boot camp comedy, Episode 6 lands a surprisingly heavy punch. Here is how Eduardo Ochoa meets his end on the show, and how that stacks up against the real-life memoir it adapts.
Quick refresher: what is Boots?
Created by Andy Parker, Boots adapts Greg Cope White's memoir The Pink Marine, which pulls from White's own experience. The series follows Cameron Cope, a closeted gay man who enlists and tries to survive boot camp. The cast includes Miles Heizer, Johnathan Nieves, Blake Burt, Nicholas Logan, and Vera Farmiga.
So what happens to Ochoa?
Ochoa is Cope's bunkmate, and the show starts tightening the screws on him in Episode 5, 'Bullseye.' It snowballs from there:
- Ochoa complains of chest pain. Cope urges him to get checked out. Ochoa waves it off.
- As the camp's top marksman, Ochoa earns a phone call. He calls his wife, Gloria. A man answers. The implication is obvious, and it wrecks him.
- He unravels, even lashing out at drill sergeant Howitt. Howitt pushes back hard with brutal punishment drills.
- Ochoa collapses. Howitt performs CPR, but it is too late. Ochoa dies.
- Episode 6, 'The Things We Carry,' explains why: he had a condition he kept to himself.

It is a stark turn for a show that mostly plays as a comedy-drama. The death casts a long shadow over the back half of the season.
How the show changes the book
On screen, Ochoa is inspired by the author's real bunkmate, a recruit named Pritchett. In the memoir, Pritchett does not die. After being led to believe his wife had stopped writing to him, he attempted to hang himself. Later, his sergeant admitted he had been messing with him and handed over the letters his wife had actually sent. The series swaps that grim but ultimately survivable moment for a fatal collapse tied to a hidden health issue. It is a notable pivot that adds tragedy to a story that otherwise leans on humor and heart.
