Inconsistencies in Sheldon’s First Kiss Create Yet Another Young Sheldon Plot Hole
Maintaining consistency with a TV show's original plot can be challenging, particularly when it spans years and gives rise to sequels and prequels.
This is especially true for shows with more straightforward storylines, where narrative mistakes are almost unavoidable.
Young Sheldon has enjoyed immense popularity, rivalling its parent sitcom, The Big Bang Theory. Focused on the childhood of TBBT's most notable titular character, Young Sheldon debuted when TBBT was still on the air. Six seasons later, the spin-off remains a hit with viewers.
Despite its popularity, die-hard The Big Bang Theory fans have criticised Young Sheldon for occasionally straying from the TBBT canon. Let's examine a particularly glaring example of this.
In the 21st episode of TBBT's fourth season, Sheldon finds himself at a bar with Penny, Bernadette, and Amy. As the women indulge in alcoholic beverages, they bombard Sheldon with questions about his romantic experiences, specifically asking if he has ever kissed a woman.
Without hesitation, Sheldon asserts that he has only ever kissed his meemaw, mother, and sister. Fans who have watched Young Sheldon can't help but wonder if he could really have never shared a kiss with his rival, Paige.
Depending on your perspective, you may either be frustrated or relieved to learn that the writers maintained continuity in this instance. Sheldon and Paige did not, in fact, ever kiss; instead, the mischievous Paige at one point tricks Sheldon into closing his eyes for a kiss so she can draw a moustache on his face, which it then takes him several hours to discover.
However, this revelation exposes another inconsistency within The Big Bang Theory: Sheldon did share a kiss with Leonard's mother, Beverly, in season 3.
An inebriated Beverly planted a smooch on Sheldon before leaving his and Leonard's apartment. Perhaps Sheldon doesn't consider this a real kiss, as he didn't reciprocate Beverly's advances.
Regardless, the issue of his first kiss remains somewhat controversial, likely because the writers sometimes play fast and loose with some of the plot details.
