Netflix is moving ahead with Luther 2, bringing Idris Elba back as DCI John Luther and adding The Witcher star Anya Chalotra and Andor’s Kyle Soller to the cast after 2023’s Luther: The Fallen Sun performed strongly, with more details to come as production progresses.

John Luther isn't done ruining bad guys' plans (or his own life). Netflix is moving ahead with another Luther movie — call it 'Luther 2' for now — and Idris Elba is back in the coat.

What Netflix is making

This is the follow-up to 2023's Luther: The Fallen Sun, which did well enough to kick the door open for another round. Netflix officially gave this one the go-ahead in November 2025. There's no title yet, but the plan is straightforward: keep the crime saga rolling.

Who's in it

  • Returning: Idris Elba as DCI John Luther; Ruth Wilson as Alice Morgan; Dermot Crowley as DSU Martin Schenk.
  • New additions: Stephen Dillane, Anya Chalotra, Kyle Soller, Ian Hart, and Niamh Algar.

The setup

Character details are under wraps, but the story kicks off with a fresh wave of violent, apparently random killings across London. Luther moves to shut it down while pressure closes in from multiple directions. Classic Luther mess, just bigger.

Behind the camera

Series creator Neil Cross is writing again, reuniting with director Jamie Payne, who steered the last film. Producing duties are split between David Ready and Samantha Nisenboim for Chernin Entertainment; Cross, Elba, and Gina Carter for 22Summers; plus Tim Lewis. The package is basically the same machine that powered Fallen Sun — a good sign for consistency.

When it shoots

Cameras are scheduled to roll in London in February 2026, with filming expected to wrap by May. So yes, it's a wait — but the pieces are clearly sliding into place.

Why this is happening

Luther: The Fallen Sun opened in select theaters on February 24, 2023, then hit Netflix on March 10, 2023. It performed strongly on the platform, which is why we're here. Expect more specifics once production actually starts.
