Hugh Jackman Teases Wolverine Return, Sets the Record Straight on Avengers Doomsday
Hugh Jackman isn’t ruling out another run as Wolverine. Fresh off Deadpool & Wolverine, he hinted a return could be on the horizon and weighed in on the chances of showing up in Avengers: Doomsday.
Hugh Jackman just did the talk show rounds for his new movie and, shocker, ended up fielding Wolverine questions. He gave a very Jackman answer: part firm no, part sly maybe. So let’s unpack it.
The View, the question, and the face-covering no
Jackman stopped by The View to promote Song Sung Blue, the upcoming film he stars in with Kate Hudson. Naturally, the conversation drifted to Wolverine and whether he’s back for Avengers: Doomsday.
Sunny Hostin brought up something he told Cynthia Erivo on Variety and CNN’s Actors on Actors — basically, that he might not be done with the claws — and asked if that was a hint he’s in Doomsday. Jackman shut that down.
“That’s not a clue.”
“Watch my face. Try to work this out. No.”
Yes, he literally covered his face with his hands to say it. Subtle as a sledgehammer. But then he complicated it — because of course he did.
The five-year break, the Ryan Reynolds factor, and the gut check
Jackman said he genuinely thought he was done. For about five years, Ryan Reynolds kept calling to get him back. Jackman kept saying no… until one day he called Ryan and said he was in. That’s how we got Deadpool & Wolverine.
Where he’s at now, according to him: his instincts say the Wolverine story isn’t over, even if he isn’t committing to anything specific.
“My gut says it’s not done. But that’s just me! Marvel might have different ideas.”
So is he in Avengers: Doomsday or not?
Short answer: he says no — at least, no clues today. Longer answer: you can see why the rumor mill is working overtime.
Jackman last suited up as Logan in 2024’s Deadpool & Wolverine, which officially pulled both characters into the MCU. Avengers: Doomsday is one of next year’s big-ticket releases, the cast is already massive, and some familiar X-Men faces are involved. Naturally, fans are connecting dots and not-so-subtle wish-casting him into Avengers 5 (and even 6). It’s the kind of behind-the-scenes chatter that doesn’t come out of nowhere.
- On The View, he said his Actors on Actors comment was not a clue for Doomsday.
- He gave an emphatic on-camera “No” to being in that movie.
- He also said his gut tells him Wolverine isn’t done — but stressed Marvel decides.
- Context: he thought he was finished for five years until he called Ryan Reynolds and jumped into Deadpool & Wolverine.
- He’s been Wolverine for about 25 years, and speculation about Avengers 5 and 6 is still running hot.
Where I land
He isn’t confirming anything. He’s also not exactly closing the door. Given the size of Doomsday and the X-Men presence already in the mix, I wouldn’t bet rent money on a cameo — but I wouldn’t be stunned either if the claws pop out when the lights go down.
