How the WGA Strike Will Affect House of the Dragon? George RR Martin Weighs In
While the ongoing Writers Guild of America (WGA) strike is starting to have an impact on various television productions, even such popular shows as House of the Dragon is no exception.
The WGA strike has been prompted by writers demanding better pay and job security in the entertainment industry.
Now creator and executive producer George RR Martin has shared his personal thoughts on the matter.
What George RR Martin had to say about the strike
In a recent post on his personal blog, Martin unsurprisingly, gave his 'full and complete and unequivocal' support of the WGA strike. Talking about his own experiences with the guild and previous strikes he has been a part of, he offered no estimate as to how long he thought the strike would continue to last; simply suggesting that it could be a while. Although he stated confidently he has never seen the guild as united as it is now.
Martin refused to discuss in too much detail the reasons behind the strike, for fear of being dragged into the conversation unnecessarily. However, he did explain that recent changes in the entertainment industry, largely relating to the increasing popularity of streaming services, has created the demand for shorter seasons.
The GoT's writer went on to explain how this has had a direct effect on writers, who usually only get paid per episode. He ended his post by urging others to be aware of the matters, and thanking those that have already shown their support.
How this will affect HotD
As well as talking about the strike in general, Martin discussed how the strike is currently affecting a number of his own projects. Mentioning the likelihood and prospects of a number of series that will hopefully broadcast sometime in the future.
Of course, he left undoubtedly the most popular of his shows until last. Announcing that the second season of HotD is well underway with production in England and Wales. Fortunately, he revealed that the scripts, including all drafts and revisions, have already been completed and finalised. Therefore any delay caused from the strikes, dissimilar to many other projects, is unlikely.
Although it sounds like HotD remains unaffected by the strikes for now, he failed to mention any additional updates to when he thought the series would release. Current estimates are still predicting it to be late 2024 if the production stays on track.
Of course, it remains to be seen if the WGA strike will impact the series' quality and success in any way. With such a positive reception to the show's first season, the bar has been set very high by fans, and the second season is highly anticipated to say the least.
