It turns out filming the third season was quite a challenge for the actor, emotionally.

The first season of Apple TV's hit series Ted Lasso arrived at just the right time in 2020 when the world needed a feel-good show to cope with the difficult year of the pandemic. Viewers loved the cosy atmosphere of the series and its characters, describing Ted, Nate, and Rebecca as some of the best-written characters in contemporary television.

Naturally, fans viewed the entire AFC Richmond team as great friends, so when former kit man Nate decided to switch sides and become the manager of the team's biggest rival, fans expressed their disdain for the traitorous character.

In Season 3, Nate finds himself isolated, without friends to lean on, and surrounded by a new team of football players who treat him with contempt. It's undoubtedly a challenging time for Nate, but filming the story was also a difficult period for the actor who portrays him - Nick Mohammed.

During the production of the first two seasons, Nick became close friends with Jason Sudeikis, Brett Goldstein, and Brendan Hunt, spending most of his time filming scenes with them. So, when his character decided to leave Richmond and pursue a career elsewhere, Nick had to work on the show without his friends, and it appears he struggled as a result. On the bright side, he was able to channel the emotions he was experiencing into his character.

‘From a practical point of view, some of that stuff was quite lonely to film, because obviously I'm not shooting with the gang. We try to use as much of that feeling of loneliness and abandonment and channel it into Nate, because that is precisely what he's feeling,’ Mohammed explained.

Fans were so moved by the actor's revelation that they almost forgot how much they disliked his character. In any case, Nate is clearly unhappy with his current work situation, and fans suspect that the writers are preparing a redemption arc for him, which could see him return to Richmond from West Ham and lead his first team to victory over the second. Nick Mohammed would likely appreciate the idea, don't you think?

Ted Lasso Season 3 Episode 9 will arrive on Apple TV + on 10 May 2023.
