The unsuccessful Max series is about to be put out of its misery.

Max's new series, The Idol, got the dubious distinction of being controversial as soon as the first episode was dropped on 4 June. The Weeknd-produced show fell a long way short of viewer expectations. The creators' intentions weren't clear, and everyone was soon voicing their frustration with the dragged-out and grotesquely exaggerated narrative.

And yet people kept watching The Idol, intrigued to see what would happen next and willing to give The Weekend's muddled misfire another chance. Four episodes have been dropped so far, and many now want to know how many more are left.

The most recent episode, Stars Belong to the World, has just been released. It features Lily-Rose Depp's character, Jocelyn, challenging Tedros, portrayed by The Weeknd, as she tries to reassert her dominance in their complicated and highly toxic relationship. Furthermore, the aspiring musician intends to reinvent herself artistically and give the world a taste of her new self. Meanwhile, Jocelyn's team speculates about how to break Tedros's hold on her.

The story only seems to be getting more intense and building up to some kind of a culmination. It's natural to expect for this arc to unfold across several more episodes, but the reality is that there is only one episode left in The Idol.

Titled Jocelyn Forever, the fifth and final episode of the new Max series is scheduled for 2 July. It is supposed to dot all the i's and cross all the t's in this chapter of the show. Hopefully, they manage to wrap it up gracefully, as it doesn't look like this disaster of a show will be getting a second season.

In fact, Max, formerly known as HBO and HBO Max, is generally known for the outstanding quality of its productions. Usually, they produce shows that are at least good, and they often put out ones that are instant hits. After all, HBO has given the world such masterpieces of television as Sex and the City and Game of Thrones, which have attracted millions of viewers worldwide. Against this backdrop, The Idol is a disgrace.

With just one episode left, set to drop on 2 July, we can only hope that it at least manages to deliver a proper coup de grace to this lame duck of a show.
