Fresh off The Iron Claw, Mindhunter alum Holt McCallany heads back into the shadows to lead the serial killer thriller Paradise: Disturbed. Expect another chilling dive into the dark.

Holt McCallany chasing down a killer again? Yeah, that makes sense. The guy has been quietly crushing it for decades, and now he is fronting a new thriller that sounds tailor-made for his steely stare and 'I have seen things' energy.

The setup

Deadline says McCallany has signed on to star in 'Paradise: Disturbed,' a serial killer thriller that just started shooting in Savannah, Georgia. James Khanlarian is directing for Khanlarian Entertainment and co-wrote the script with producer Peter A. Couture, adapting James Robert Fuller’s novel of the same name.

The hook: a string of ritualistic murders starts picking off members of a tight-knit golf group. McCallany plays Ron Lee, a retired OSI investigator — think the military’s criminal investigative arm — who gets pulled back in to match wits with a killer who loves to taunt, while his partner tries to keep him from coming apart.

Cast

  • Holt McCallany as Ron Lee, the retired OSI investigator
  • Zak Steiner (Euphoria) as Tim Pond, Ron’s partner
  • Lily Donoghue (The Summer I Turned Pretty)
  • Pat Healy (Cheap Thrills)
  • D.W. Moffett (Lisa)
  • Xander Berkeley (The Walking Dead)
  • Cat Kaylin (Purple Hearts)
  • Mary Pumper (The Ghost Trap)
  • Nadia Gray (All Rise)
  • Sara Yigin (The Mafia's Innocent Lover)

Behind the camera

Couture is producing alongside April Aguilera and Larry Mortorff. Casting is by Jonathan Clay Harris, who is also serving as an executive producer.

Why this fits McCallany

If you know him primarily as FBI agent Bill Tench in David Fincher’s 'Mindhunter' (which remains in limbo, sadly), this feels like a natural extension: methodical investigator, unnerving crimes, psychological games. His career goes way beyond that, though. He made his TV debut back in 1986 on 'All My Children,' then popped up in 'Creepshow 2' the next year — a memorable turn, even if that casting choice reads as problematic now. Since then, he’s been steadily stacking credits and is closing in on the 100 mark.

You have definitely seen him in at least a few of these: 'Casualties of War,' 'Alien 3,' 'Jade,' 'The Peacemaker,' 'Fight Club,' 'Three Kings,' 'Below,' 'Monk,' 'CSI: Miami,' 'Alpha Dog,' 'Heroes,' 'Bullet to the Head,' 'Gangster Squad,' 'Golden Boy,' 'Blue Bloods,' 'Sully,' 'Jack Reacher: Never Go Back,' 'Shot Caller,' 'Greenland,' 'Wrath of Man,' 'The Ice Road,' 'Nightmare Alley,' 'Foundation,' '61st Street,' 'The Lincoln Lawyer,' 'The Amateur,' 'Mission: Impossible - The Final Reckoning,' 'The Waterfront,' and 'The Iron Claw,' among others.

Quick take

The premise has a clean, pulpy snap to it, and the 'golf group as murder target' angle is oddly specific in a way that makes me curious. McCallany versus a taunting killer is already enough of a hook. Production is underway now in Savannah, so expect more soon once this one wraps and starts making the rounds.
