People are sure the show will end sooner rather than later.

Summary

  • Leaks from the filming of Season 3 made fans think that the show might end sooner than expected.
  • Alice Oseman may try to end the story as early as next season, but some fans are sure that Netflix will not allow it.

Following the monumental success of Heartstopper's Season 2, Netflix was swift to renew the popular LGBTQ+ teen romance series for Season 3, and production has already begun. Every day, fans are treated to paparazzi leaks from the set, and while it's heartening to see Kit Connor and Joe Locke in action, some of these leaks have made the fandom somewhat apprehensive about the show's future.

The thing is, the upcoming Season 3 is supposed to cover the fourth graphic novel in Alice Oseman's original series, but images of the crew filming at the university indicate that the showrunner plans to cover the fifth book as well. While this may not seem like a big deal, longtime Oseman followers are convinced it's a rather ominous sign.

No More Books to Adapt

The concept of Netflix attempting to adapt two entire novels into an 8-episode season seems ludicrous, but it is further exacerbated by the 30-minute episode runtime, which will force the writers to omit many cherished scenes from the novels.

Moreover, Oseman is far too engrossed with the show to actually write and illustrate another Heartstopper sequel, as she hasn't even begun working on the upcoming Volume 6.

With this in mind, fans speculate that Oseman will try to wrap up the show in Season 3, devise an original ending for Nick and Charlie, and concentrate more on completing her graphic novels instead.

Hope Springs Eternal

While many Heartstopper fans are concerned about the show's potential early conclusion, others remain optimistic, contending that Netflix will never allow such a popular show to end after only three seasons. Even if Oseman attempts to end the show on her own terms, the producers will likely dissuade her, possibly even giving her a year or two to finish her books on the condition that she goes back to working on the show after that.

In any event, the success of Season 2 demonstrated that Heartstopper has the potential to become an exceptionally popular show, and it's highly improbable that Netflix won't renew it for Season 4.
