Here's Why Heartstopper Fans Have a Problem With Darcy's Portrayal
Darcy is an ambiguous character, and that's what makes Heartstopper so compelling.
Netflix's Heartstopper, created and written by Alice Oseman, is a delightful coming-of-age comedy-drama about accepting one's feelings and identity, overcoming mental barriers, and navigating teenage friendship and love.
Sometimes, it makes us nostalgic for our teenage years, wishing this series had been part of our own adolescence.
Brilliant Cast vs Darcy
A standout feature of the series is the exceptional cast of meticulously selected up-and-coming actors. They not only resemble their literary and comic book counterparts but also authentically convey the deep emotional struggles of these vivid characters. However, fans might find one of them slightly off the mark. We're talking about Darcy Olsson.
One Redditor observed that Darcy is overly assertive and tactless, pressuring her friends to reveal their feelings or relationships. The first such instance occurs in the fourth episode of Season 1 when Darcy, sceptical that Charlie and Nick are just friends, pushes for a confession until Elle intervenes.
3 Ways for Heartstopper to End on a High Note (And 2 Ways to Ruin It Completely)
'I think this moment gets brushed aside because Darcy is correct and talks about her "gay intuition" and it's not meant to be taken too seriously, but I can't help but feel Charlie's worries that there are rumours circulating,' a fan commented.
Actions and Consequences
Her troubling behaviour continues two episodes later when Darcy proposes a date between Tao and Elle despite the former clearly stating she's not ready. She and Tara also inform Tao about Elle's feelings without her permission.
'No one apologises when Elle catches on but Tara at least acknowledges that sharing things can be hard and not always for the best, which Darcy then fixates on (and never returns back to Elle's discomfort).'
A similar incident unfolds in season two when Darcy prematurely assumes something about Isaac's feelings, causing considerable discomfort and annoyance for the young man.
Smells Like Teen Spirit?
Yet, it's crucial to remember that Darcy is a typical teenager who isn't always expected to be discerning, empathetic, and prudent. In fact, her portrayal is realistic, as many teenagers can be somewhat chaotic, messy and insensitive. The qualities mentioned above often develop through experience and exposure to more considerate individuals.
Furthermore, Darcy's background shouldn't be ignored. Seeing how she has been closeted all her life and grew up in an emotionally abusive and homophobic environment, her behaviour is partly a defence mechanism. Due to her unique circumstances, she might not fully grasp how acknowledging and expressing feelings can be challenging for others.
