Figures don't lie.

It's been almost a year since the premiere of both shows, and it would appear the debate about which one is better should have come to some kind of conclusion by now. However, that hasn't happened: fans of both House of the Dragon and The Rings of Power just won't quit. Perhaps, a more objective look at the matter could help settle the debate.

Based on George R. R. Martin's Fire & Blood novel, which explores events before A Song of Ice and Fire, House of the Dragon is a prequel to HBO's incredibly popular Game of Thrones. Essentially, the spin-off inherited its parent show's fandom and was well-received by the audience.

Meanwhile, although highly anticipated, Prime Video's The Rings of Power failed to live up to viewers' expectations, with many reportedly not finishing the show. Moreover, there's more definitive and objective proof that House of the Dragon is better.

The Max(formerly HBO) show has garnered more Emmy nominations. House of the Dragon has been nominated for Outstanding Drama Series, production design, cinematography, fantasy and sci-fi costumes, period and/or character makeup (prosthetic and non-prosthetic), sound editing, and VFX. Meanwhile, The Rings of Power got nominations in the fantasy and sci-fi costumes, main title design, prosthetic makeup, original main title theme music, sound editing, and VFX categories. In total, House of the Dragon got eight nominations to The Rings of Power's six.

Prime Video reportedly allocated a staggering $1 billion to produce five seasons of The Rings of Power, only for the show's first season to be dubbed the biggest flop of 2021 shortly after its release, with many people failing to watch it to the end. Thus, the lack of a Best Drama nomination shouldn't come as a surprise. Despite its state-of-the-art visual effects, the show fell hopelessly short of making a positive impression on audiences because of its subpar storytelling and is generally believed to have tarnished J. R. R. Tolkien's legacy.

Meanwhile, George R. R. Martin was heavily involved in the production of House of the Dragon and did a great job adapting his novels. The show proved so popular with viewers that it was quickly renewed for a second season to be released in 2024.

And as far as Emmys are concerned, we have yet to see how House of the Dragon and The Rings of Power eventually do in the awards. The ceremony will take place on 8 September.
