HBO Finally Reveals When House of the Dragon Ends
HBO has drawn the finish line for House of the Dragon: Casey Bloys says Ryan Condal’s plan will wrap the series with Season 4—even as Season 3’s premiere date remains up in the air.
Quick update for the dragon-watchers: HBO has finally put a finish line on House of the Dragon. The runway is shorter than some expected, and the specifics beyond that are still very much in flux.
So, when does House of the Dragon end?
In a new chat with Deadline, HBO CEO Casey Bloys confirmed the plan: Season 4 will be the last chapter. That lines up with what showrunner Ryan Condal had been hinting at. Season 4 was officially ordered in November, and that will close out this slice of Targaryen history.
'Yes, that is the idea... If you know the books, you know how the Targaryens end up. So there is a natural end to this particular history.'
Where things stand right now
- Season 3: Still no release date or window. Bloys says Condal is in post-production on Season 3.
- Season 4: It exists on paper, but do not expect details yet. Condal and the writers are figuring it out now.
- Episode count: Unknown for the final season. Bloys wouldn’t commit to whether the last run will be a supersized send-off.
The temperature check
The show remains a hit for HBO, but fan reaction has been split at times. Recently, George R.R. Martin stirred things up by criticizing Condal and the series and saying their working relationship had gone south. Messy? Sure. But the network is clearly moving forward with the condensed endgame.
Bottom line: expect Season 3 when it’s ready, then one more season to bring the Dance to its natural stopping point. I’ll update when HBO stops playing coy with dates and episode counts.
