Rumors point to Rockstar Games pouring nearly $2 billion into GTA 6, raising the stakes for the long-awaited sequel and positioning it as possibly the most expensive game ever.

GTA 6 rumor mill update: the internet has decided Rockstar might have spent nearly $2 billion making this thing. Yes, billion with a B. Not confirmed, but the number has been bouncing around enough to spark some very nerdy cost-comparison charts and a lot of speculation about how much we are going to pay to actually play it.

Where did the $2 billion figure even come from?

The eye-popping total went viral after a supposed hacker leak made the rounds, picked up by outlets like Visual Capitalist. Given GTA 6 has reportedly been in development for roughly 13 years, fans were already expecting a monster budget. Still, $2 billion is beyond even the usual blockbuster creep and lands in full-on wild territory.

How big is $2 billion, really?

To put the rumor in perspective, the Instagram account @themakeshiftproject posted one of those comparison videos, lining GTA 6 up against huge real-world projects and other megabudget entertainment. It is silly, but also kind of eye-opening:

  • Avengers: Infinity War + Avengers: Endgame together: nearly $800 million
  • Golden Gate Bridge (original construction): about $1 billion
  • A Mars rover mission: roughly $1.08 billion
  • Burj Khalifa: around $1.5 billion
  • GTA 5 (2013): about $265 million
  • The Last of Us Part II and God of War: Ragnarok: just over $200 million each
  • Red Dead Redemption 2: reportedly around $540 million

Compared to all of that, a $2 billion GTA 6 stands tall. Again, rumor, not a line item from Rockstar, but you get the idea.

Does Rockstar even need to worry about making it back?

Short answer: probably not. Analysts quoted by Newsweek think GTA 6 could clear $1 billion in revenue on day one. For context, GTA 5 pulled in $1.2 billion in its first five days and has reportedly made around $8 billion overall. Also, the first GTA 6 trailer already showed a ridiculously dense open world that pretty much screams: this was expensive. Most fans do not seem worried about the budget; they just want the game.

So... how much are we going to pay?

Here is where the mood dips. The current rumor is a $100 base price. That would make it one of the priciest mainstream games ever, but some industry folks think this is the one franchise that could pull it off.

'GTA 6 is the only game that could get away with such a premium price tag.'

There is also anxiety about regional pricing. In Mexico, for example, lawmakers recently approved an 8% tax on media deemed excessively violent, which could stack on top of an already premium game price. Not great if you are trying to buy this without selling a kidney. None of that seems to be rocking Rockstar internally right now, but fans would very much like a straight answer on what the retail price will be. Another trailer is expected soon, so maybe we finally get clarity.

Release window

GTA 6 is currently expected to launch in May 2026.
