Prime Video’s live-action God of War levels up with three new cast additions — including a game actor returning to the role — as Kratos and Atreus’ ash-scattering journey powers toward the small screen.

Prime Video's live-action God of War just added three more faces, including one the games will recognize instantly. The show is based on PlayStation's long-running action fantasy series that kicked off in 2005, and it's already in pre-production up in Vancouver.

"It follows father and son Kratos and Atreus as they embark on a journey to spread the ashes of their wife and mother, Faye. Through their adventures, Kratos tries to teach his son to be a better god, while Atreus tries to teach his father how to be a better human."

The new faces (and one very familiar one)

Alastair Duncan will play Mimir, reprising the role he voiced in God of War (2018) and God of War Ragnarok. In the series, Mimir is a bright, talkative mind from Celtic lands who never runs out of things to say and happily calls himself the Smartest Man in the World. That wit has history: he once advised Odin, which ended with Odin banishing him and trapping him in a tree. Cut off from everything that feeds his curiosity, Mimir is now trying to make amends for what he did in the All-Father's service.

Jeff Gulka is stepping in as Sindri, a renowned dwarven blacksmith whose work is coveted across the realms. He is helpful, meticulous, and deeply germ-averse — basically the polar opposite of his brother and partner, Brok.

And Danny Woodburn is playing Brok, another legendary dwarven smith who found himself on the outs with his community after helping build a super-weapon. He is blunt, irreverent, and proudly gruff, which keeps his relationship with Sindri... lively. Gamers know him as the go-to weapons dealer with a gift for creatively foul-mouthed insults.

Who is playing who

  • Ryan Hurst (Sons of Anarchy) as Kratos
  • Max Parker (Boots) as Heimdall
  • Mandy Patinkin (The Princess Bride) as Odin
  • Olafur Darri Olafsson (Severance) as Thor
  • Alastair Duncan (Taggart) as Mimir
  • Jeff Gulka (The X-Files) as Sindri
  • Danny Woodburn (The Witcher) as Brok

Behind the camera

Ronald D. Moore is writing the series and serving as showrunner and executive producer. Frederick E.O. Toye, an Emmy winner, is directing the first two episodes. Executive producers include Maril Davis, Cory Barlog, Naren Shankar, Matthew Graham, Asad Qizilbash, Jeff Ketcham, Hermen Hulst, Roy Lee, and Brad Van Arragon, along with Joe Menosky, Marc Bernardin, Tania Lotia, and Ben McGinnis.

The show is produced by Sony Pictures Television and Amazon MGM Studios, with PlayStation Productions and Tall Ship Productions also in the mix.

One more thing

Before a single episode has dropped, the series is already locked for a second season. Bold move, but this franchise has the muscle to back it up.
