Ghostbusters Unveils New Movie Title and Bold Plot, TV Series in the Works
Proton packs are powering up again: Insider Jeff Sneider says an animated Ghostbusters feature reportedly titled Ecto is in development, alongside a Netflix animated series with Elliott Kalan attached.
Ghostbusters is teeing up a two-pronged animated push: a feature and a series, both at Netflix, with Sony producing. The movie allegedly has a simple, very on-brand title and a premise that flips the usual POV. The show digs into a very specific corner of New York politics. Yes, this is delightfully odd.
What is actually in the pipeline
- An animated movie called 'Ecto' is in development at Netflix, reportedly told from the ghost perspective. Development on the film started back in 2022, and Sam Jarvis (Dollface) is on board to write. Sony is producing.
- An animated Ghostbusters series is also at Netflix. It is set in the 90s during Walter Peck's initial run for mayor, with Elliott Kalan executive producing and writing. Sony is producing here too.
Where this came from (and how specific it gets)
Industry watcher Jeff Sneider said the quiet part out loud during a recent podcast appearance, laying out the twin projects and who is making them.
'There are two Ghostbusters projects in the works right now. There is a movie, an animated movie. And an animated series. Both at Netflix.'
He also passed along the film's working title, 'Ecto', plus that left-field hook about telling it from the ghost side. On the series, the 90s setting lines up with a Walter Peck mayoral bid. Sneider added that both projects are targeting roughly the same audience as 'Stranger Things: Tales From '85'—so think accessible adventure, not preschool cartoon.
In February 2026, Sneider followed up in his newsletter, noting that Sam Jarvis is scripting the animated feature. The movie's development traces back to 2022, which explains why these pieces are suddenly snapping into place now.
The bigger franchise picture
Gil Kenan, who directed Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire and helps steer the current films, has already been signaling that the feature side is far from done. In late 2024, he put it this way:
'The answer is yes... we definitely are continuing the conversation of telling big Ghostbuster stories on the big screen. And stay tuned. There'll be more. There'll be more about that later.'
On the animated front, he also confirmed the Netflix series is moving:
'We are in very active development on our animated series that we are producing with Netflix.'
The read
'Ecto' told from the ghost perspective is a swing I did not have on my bingo card, and a 90s-set show built around Walter Peck's first mayoral run is exactly the kind of deep-cut worldbuilding that can either sing or go sideways fast. Either way, it sure sounds like Sony and Netflix are aiming these for that sweet spot where kids can jump in and longtime fans still feel seen.
