Plane sequel grounded as Gerard Butler exits before cameras roll.

Well, that one just got grounded. The follow-up to Gerard Butler's Plane is not happening after all, and the reason is about as simple as it gets: the star walked two weeks before cameras were set to roll.

The sequel was first announced in 2023 after Plane punched above its weight on streaming. Since then, it has been oddly quiet. Now Mike Colter, who co-starred with Butler in the first film, says the project has been dissolved.

How it fell apart

  • The sequel was announced in 2023, riding Plane's strong streaming performance.
  • Production was only weeks away from starting.
  • Two weeks before filming, Gerard Butler opted out of returning.
  • Without its lead, the team couldn't pivot, and the project dissolved.
  • Mike Colter confirmed the collapse in a recent interview.

Colter did not dress it up. He says the decision came late, there was little discussion, and the whole thing unraveled almost immediately.

"It just, last-minute, Gerard [Butler] decided he didn't want to go forward with it and there wasn't a lot of discussion about it. He just... two weeks out, he pulled out and we were sort of left trying to figure out what to do. And eventually, that dissolved."

So, yeah — the Plane sequel is off the runway. If anything changes, I will let you know, but for now, consider this one parked.
