Geralt’s Game Actor’s Verdict: Sad to Lose Henry Cavill, But Liam Hemsworth Makes The Witcher Season 4 His Own
Doug Cockle gives the nod to Liam Hemsworth as Geralt, backing the new Witcher.
If you were on the fence about Liam Hemsworth stepping into Geralt's boots on Netflix's The Witcher, the guy who literally defined Geralt's voice in the games just weighed in. And he is into it.
Doug Cockle gives Liam a thumbs up
Doug Cockle, the original voice of Geralt of Rivia in CD Projekt's games, told GamesRadar+ at the Golden Joystick Awards that Hemsworth is doing right by the character after Henry Cavill's exit. He was honest about missing Cavill but thinks Hemsworth made the right choice by not doing a carbon copy.
"I loved Henry... so I was sad to see him go, but I have watched the newest season, and I think Liam holds up pretty well. He's different. He's made it his own character... and I think he's done a fantastic job. I'm looking forward to seeing Season Five and where it goes."
That is not nothing coming from the man who has been Geralt's growl since 2007.
Why this matters (and where The Witcher is headed)
- Cockle first voiced Geralt in the 2007 game The Witcher and has returned for five more game projects since. The next mainline entry, commonly referred to as The Witcher IV, is still TBA.
- On the Netflix side: Henry Cavill played Geralt for three seasons, then passed the swords to Liam Hemsworth for season 4.
- Season 4 is streaming now. Reviews have been mixed overall, but some critics are into the new vibe — GamesRadar+ even called it the show's best season yet and gave it four stars.
- The live-action series will wrap with season 5, which Netflix plans to premiere in late 2026.
- Even after the main show ends, expect the franchise to keep breathing on Netflix via animated movies. Cockle already voiced Geralt in the animated film The Witcher: Sirens of the Deep, and it would be a shock if he wasn't back for more.
My read
Recasting a lead mid-run is always touchy, especially with a character as baked-in as Geralt. Cockle saying Hemsworth made it his own and still nailed it should calm some nerves. Different does not mean worse — and in this case, it sounds like different might be working.
