Geralt of Rivia is maybe best known as the stoic monster-hunter with a preference for neutrality.

But as we delve into the highly anticipated third season of The Witcher, due later this month, it seems that Geralt's commitment to staying uninvolved might face its greatest challenge yet. Our beloved hero's steadfast resolve will likely be put to the test as this season's biggest twist will see Geralt finally have to choose a side.

What Witcher showrunners had to say about season 3

In an intriguing interview with SFX Magazine (according to Slashfilm), showrunner Lauren Schmidt Hissrich shed some light on Geralt's political evolution and why he will ultimately decide to take sides in season 3.

'From the very beginning, Geralt has talked a lot about being neutral… he is very clear that he doesn't want to get into politics', Hissrich said. 'He exists for one reason, to kill monsters.'

Expanding more on this season's themes Hissrich goes on to say, 'With all the parties that are after Ciri, his neutrality really comes into question. When Geralt loses the two people he loves so deeply, it causes him to give up on his neutrality because he will do anything to get them back.'

Hissrich is almost certainly referencing Ciri and Yennefer, and the plot seems similar to the second Witcher book of the novels, from which the series is inspired by.

Based on Hissrich's comments, it seems likely that Geralt will at some point find he can no longer afford to remain impartial during the upcoming season. And he will utilize his fierce determination to bring Ciri and Yennefer back, risking everything to reclaim what he holds dear. Which way Geralt will choose to lay his allegiances, however, remains to be seen.

Other twists to expect from season 3

While Geralt embarks on this next journey throughout the season, fans will also face an upcoming decision of choice themselves. TThe news that Henry Cavill is departing the show and will be replaced by Liam Hemsworth in the upcoming fourth season has left viewers curious about how the transition will be handled. As we anxiously anticipate the show's future, we can't help but wonder how the following season will explain this casting change, and how it will affect the series going forward.

As fans eagerly await the unveiling of Geralt's fate in season 3, it's worth noting that the season will be divided into two volumes, with Part 1 premiering on June 29, 2023, and Part 2, likely the last episodes featuring Cavill, arriving on July 27, 2023. Nevertheless, we're excited for the thrilling next chapter of The Witcher and the continuing story of TV's best monster-hunter.
