Westeros isn’t done yet: fresh off renewals for House of the Dragon and A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms, George R. R. Martin says HBO has five or six more Game of Thrones spin-offs in development—over six years after the original series ended.

Westeros is not done with us. Fresh off HBO renewing both 'House of the Dragon' and 'A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms', George R.R. Martin says there are more spin-offs brewing. As in: five or six of them. And not just prequels.

So, how many shows are we talking about?

In a new chat with Spanish outlet Los Siete Reinos, Martin said he is actively involved with a handful of projects across the 'Game of Thrones' universe. Most are set before the main series, but he flat-out confirmed sequel ideas are also on the table. He also emphasized he is collaborating with other writers and producers — this is not a solo mission.

"There are several in development, maybe five or six shows. Most are prequels... Yes, there are some sequels. And I am not developing them alone — I am working with other people."

Important translation for how TV actually works: "in development" means meetings, outlines, scripts, and endless notes — not a guaranteed greenlight. Some of these could stall out; some could jump the line fast, especially with the brand running hot again.

Why now?

Timing-wise, this update hits more than six years after the original 'Game of Thrones' wrapped its eight-season run. Even with the finale backlash, the mothership still carries weight: it sits at an 89% average on Rotten Tomatoes, and Emmy voters showered it with trophies during its peak.

  • The basics: 'Game of Thrones' was created for TV by David Benioff and D.B. Weiss, adapted from Martin's 'A Song of Ice and Fire' novels.
  • Ensemble highlights: Emilia Clarke, Lena Headey, Kit Harington, Peter Dinklage, Sophie Turner, Maisie Williams, Nikolaj Coster-Waldau, Gwendoline Christie, Aidan Gillen, Rory McCann, Richard Madden, Sean Bean, Pedro Pascal, and more.
  • Awards haul: 59 Emmy wins out of 161 nominations.
  • Current slate: HBO just renewed 'House of the Dragon' and 'A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms'.
  • What Martin just added: 5–6 more spin-offs are in development, mostly prequels, with some sequels, and he is collaborating with other creatives.

Bottom line: HBO is clearly keeping the Westeros pipeline stocked. Which of these actually makes it to air is the real question — but the menu is bigger than we thought, and yes, that includes stories set after the original series.
