HBO’s Game of Thrones spin-off, A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms, could run far longer than fans expected, as George R.R. Martin has already shared outlines for 12 yet-unpublished Dunk and Egg stories with the series’ co-creator.

Well, here’s something for anyone still nursing a Game of Thrones hangover (or maybe you’re just in it for the swords and drama, no judgment). HBO’s got another spin-off in the works: ‘A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms’, which is basically a series version of George R.R. Martin’s Tales of Dunk and Egg stories. But the real twist? This thing might end up running for a long, long time—if HBO decides to really milk it.

Wait, How Many Dunk & Egg Stories Are There?

This is where things get a bit eyebrow-raising. In a recent chat with The National, Ira Parker (who’s co-creating the show) let slip that Martin has handed over outlines for “about 10 to 12” more stories covering Dunk and Egg’s adventures. So yes, that’s an entire stack of new potential episodes just waiting to be adapted. Basically, Martin shared with Parker his game plan for carrying Dunk and Egg ‘all the way through their life.’ In TV land, that’s enough plot to keep a franchise humming along for who knows how many years.

Don’t Start Planning Your 2035 GoT Watch Party Just Yet

Before you get visions of an epic eight or nine season run, pump the brakes. Parker was quick to stress that nobody at HBO is planning that far ahead. The focus right now is on Season 1 (which is actually happening) and Season 2 (already green-lit). As Parker put it:

"Certainly, I love doing it. I love writing in this world, and it’s a wonderful story. So, I hope we get to make as many of these as possible."

In other words, they’re in this for as long as the audience is. If people show up to watch, Dunk and Egg could wind up being Westeros’ version of Law & Order.

The Ever-Changing Math of George R.R. Martin

Martin being Martin, he’s always been a moving target when it comes to how many Dunk & Egg novellas he’ll write. Back in a 2014 blog post, he admitted that the numbers he’s tossed around—seven, ten, twelve—weren’t exactly chiseled into the Wall. So just be aware the total count is about as stable as a Lannister alliance.

What Exists So Far?

  • The Hedge Knight (1988)
  • The Sworn Sword (2003)
  • The Mystery Knight (2010)

These three stories were bundled into the book ‘A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms’ back in 2015, and that’s what the upcoming show is based on. But those extra dozen outlines? That’s all brand new material as far as the public is concerned.

So, Who’s Actually In This Thing?

The cast so far includes Peter Claffey, Dexter Sol Ansell, Sam Spruell, Finn Bennett, Daniel Ings, Bertie Carvel, and Tanzyn Crawford. No, these names are not all household yet, but hey—nobody knew Kit Harington in 2011 either.

When Does It Finally Arrive?

Mark your calendars: ‘A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms’ is scheduled to premiere on HBO on January 18, 2026. So, plenty of time for re-reading or, if you’re Martin, writing a few more of those ‘not set in stone’ stories.

So, to sum it up: HBO’s hoping this not-so-little series might stick around as long as Westeros has dragons. Whether fans are in for the long haul? That’s anybody’s guess.
