Freya Allan Praises The Witcher For Sticking To The Books With The Rats — Even When Netflix Gets Nervous
Ciri returns for the show's fifth and final season, setting up a high-stakes farewell.
The Witcher does not shy away from gore in its season 4 closer, and Freya Allan is openly happy about that. The Ciri actor says Netflix actually let the story be as nasty as the books this time, which is exactly what that moment needed.
Big season 4 spoilers ahead.
What actually happens in the finale
The last episode throws The Rats straight at Leo Bonhart, the infamous bounty hunter and witcher-killer played by Sharlto Copley. It goes as badly as you think: he cuts them down one by one. Ciri shows up too late to save anyone, gets knocked out, and wakes just in time to be forced to watch her girlfriend Mistle beheaded. It is a lot. And, yes, it mirrors the books beat for beat.
"I am so glad they went there. Sometimes Netflix is afraid to bring certain things to life, but I am glad they stuck to the books for that. It is such a pivotal part of Ciri's journey. Unfortunately, she just does not seem to get a break."
Allan is seeing the story through the end
With the fantasy series heading into its fifth and final season, Allan has already said goodbye to Ciri on set — filming on the last batch of episodes is wrapped. She admits she considered walking when Henry Cavill exited, but she chose to stay and finish out with Liam Hemsworth stepping in as the new Geralt of Rivia.
Missing The Rats? Netflix already dropped a detour
If you are still mourning that massacre, Netflix quietly released a companion film called 'The Rats: A Witcher Tale'. It is a prequel to season 4 that fills in the gang's backstory and even brushes against what is next for Ciri. Dolph Lundgren pops up as a witcher named Brehen, tagging along with a crew of street-smart criminals for a rough little adventure.
