Forget What You Know: Zach Cregger’s Resident Evil Reboot Breaks From The Zombie Franchise
Resident Evil returns to the big screen with a reboot packing fresh scares and surprises for diehard fans.
Resident Evil is getting rebooted again, and this one is not playing it safe. Zach Cregger is steering the ship, and if you were hoping for a straight line back to the previous movies or games, that is not what he is making.
A hard reset, by design
Constantin Film CEO Oliver Berben says Cregger is not patching into the old continuity. His words, not mine:
"complete new set up"
He would not touch plot specifics, but doubled down on how different this take is supposed to feel:
"far away from everything that is connected to Resident Evil, only because Zach Cregger has his own style"
That is a bold way to describe a property this recognizable. Translation: expect fresh angles, not fan-service stitching.
Timing, status, and Cregger's crowded dance card
The film is in post-production right now and is slated for theaters later this year. Cregger has multiple projects on the runway and is one of the most in-demand directors working, but this Resident Evil is next up. For context, he also has Weapons on the way in 2025.
What we actually know (and what we do not)
- It is a complete reboot, not connected to past Resident Evil installments.
- Currently in post-production.
- Targeting a theatrical release later this year.
- Directed by Zach Cregger, with Weapons dated for 2025.
- No plot details yet, but the creative brief is a big swing away from the franchise playbook.
When they finally show footage or cough up a synopsis, I will be first in line to dig into how far this thing really strays. Until then, pencil it in as the boldest Resident Evil pivot we have seen in years.
