Despite being centered on soccer, Ted Lasso is first and foremost a show about personal trials and tribulations that happen to everyone against the background of their careers.

One of such personal topics touched upon in the series is people's willingness and ability to face their emotions, open up in a romantic relationship, and learn to live in the present moment. In particular, these issues are reflected in Roy Kent and Keeley Jones' storyline in the show.

The characters' romance, which began in the eighth episode of season one and continued throughout season two, came to a dramatic end in the third season. Their breakup came as a shock to both the members of AFC Richmond and the audience, who initially expected the bright and positive romantic dynamic between Roy and Keeley to live on and grow into a strong relationship.

Brett Goldstein and Juno Temple, the actors playing Roy and Keeley, recently shared their thoughts on their characters' decision to break up.

'I think they both really wanted each other to grow and find their own footing. And I think that has also led to complications of them being able to make it work as a couple,' Temple said.

In the episode 'Smells Like Mean Spirit,' Keeley and Roy reveal to his niece they are going to separate due to their conflicting work schedules. Roy decides to focus on coaching the team to beat West Ham, and Keeley wants to spend more time developing her business.

At the same time, Keeley admits that she is too stressed about how little time she has left because of work. And this might be a good indicator of the fact that the characters' busy work schedules may not be the only reason for their breakup, as their decision may actually be grounded in their deeper insecurities.

'Then he falls in love with Keeley, and she cracks him open. All these feelings come forward, but he has no way of managing them,' Goldstein commented, shedding some light on his character's complex emotions.

In another episode, we see Roy talking to the team, sharing his reflections on how he might not have left Chelsea if he had learned to enjoy the present moment. His doubts prevented him from staying in the club then, and this may also be the reason he chooses to abandon his relationship with Keeley.

It's incredibly sad to see these nice characters, who clearly wish the best for each other, suddenly break up and choose to focus on their careers, while actually both are simply afraid to live in the present moment and open up to one another and their own feelings. That's why Roy and Keeley's drama has resonated strongly with the audience, and many fans find their love arc particularly relatable — which is also quite depressing, isn't it?
