Five Nights at Freddy's 2 Gets Official Rating — Fans Won't Be Happy

The highly anticipated sequel to the horror hit Five Nights at Freddy's has just received its official rating, and it's not what longtime fans were hoping for. Find out why the decision has sparked backlash and disappointment across the FNaF community.
If you were hoping Five Nights at Freddy's 2 was about to go full splatter-fest, temper those expectations. The sequel just locked the same PG-13 rating as the first movie, and the content notes are actually a little softer this time. Let’s break it down.
The rating: same grade, milder warning
Per FilmRatings.com, Five Nights at Freddy's 2 is rated PG-13 for 'violent content, terror, and some language.' The 2023 movie carried a sterner set of tags: 'strong violent content, bloody images, and language.' In other words, no 'bloody images' callout this time, and the 'strong' label is gone.
That’s a curveball because producer Jason Blum told fans earlier this summer that the team heard the biggest complaints about the first film and would push harder in the sequel. At CCXP in June, he said:
'We took lots of criticism, saying it was not scary, lacked blood or strong scenes. We decided to implement all that in the sequel.'
So now everyone is asking the obvious: did the studio actually crank things up, or is this another teen-friendly fright ride in the same lane? For what it’s worth, yes, the first movie was 2023 (not 2021), despite some chatter that keeps mislabeling the year.
PG-13 does not automatically equal toothless
I get why some horror fans think no R-rating means no real bite. But PG-13 can still be nasty if you lean into dread, timing, and implication. You just can’t linger on the aftermath. The first Five Nights at Freddy's was dragged by critics but played well with audiences, and that second group is the one buying tickets. If the sequel is smarter and meaner in execution, the rating alone won’t decide the outcome.

The promise of a bigger sequel
Star Josh Hutcherson says the scope is expanding, including the animatronics situation:
'It’s much bigger; the stakes are higher. There’s more animatronics being brought in, different animatronics being brought in, and the world just opens up in a big way. We’re finding the balance right now of building this world and expanding it in a really cool way but also making sure the characters stay really grounded.'
So, should fans be worried?
The softer content descriptors are a buzzkill if you were banking on a bloodier sequel after Blum’s CCXP comments. But the movie can still land harder than the first if the scares are better engineered, even inside PG-13. If it clicks with audiences again (and with a holiday release date, it’s set up to), do not be shocked if this franchise keeps cranking out more rounds.
