With Rebirth in the rearview, Final Fantasy 7 Remake is hurtling toward its grand finale — and Part 3 is shaping up to be the long-awaited capstone to one of gaming’s most ambitious RPG projects. Here’s what we know so far.

Final Fantasy 7 Remake is two games deep and gearing up for the big finish. Rebirth did the heavy lifting, shuffled the deck in some bold ways, and now all eyes are on Part 3. We still do not have a title or a date, but there is a surprising amount of real info out there from the devs themselves. Here is where things actually stand, minus the guess-y fluff.

Where development stands right now

Director Naoki Hamaguchi has been unusually open about progress. At Brazil Game Show 2025 - relayed by Genki_JPN - he said the story for Part 3 is done, and the ending is already locked in his head. Like how Remake leaned on the idea of 'reunion' and Rebirth on 'bonds', the finale will also center on one key word. He did not give the word, because of course he did not.

He also told ScreenRant that the team heard the feedback about Rebirth dragging in spots - yes, including Costa del Sol - and the finale is being built to strike a tighter balance between story and pace. Over at Automaton, he said development is going 'extremely well', a lot of the game is already playable internally, and the plan is a proper, high-quality send-off.

In a chat with JPGames, Hamaguchi added that the title is decided and, like the first two, it is meant to reflect the actual experience of playing it. He hopes to share news in the near future and reiterated that Part 3 is the final chapter of this remake project.

The schedule - what they will say out loud

Tetsuya Nomura told Gematsu that Square Enix already knows when this thing is coming out and they are working toward that date. His words, not mine:

"The release timing has already been decided."

Square has not announced the date publicly, but between a finished script, voice recording underway, and playable builds, the tea leaves point to a 2027 launch window. A full reveal feels like a 2026 move, though if Square wants to start the drumbeat early, The Game Awards this December is the obvious stage for a teaser.

DLC, a fourth game, and how far they might push this

Here is the behind-the-scenes wrinkle: Hamaguchi told Wccftech they are actively considering DLC for Part 3 - and even floated that a DLC-sized idea could spin into a full game depending on how the finale lands. That tracks with earlier chatter that Rebirth almost had DLC before the team decided to focus on shipping Part 3 sooner. Translation: DLC was on the table, it got bumped, and now it is back on the table for the finale.

On where they could go next, Nomura has said to The Guardian that Advent Children will connect to the end of this trilogy. That is interesting, because it opens doors for post-launch stories to bridge into or out of that film timeline instead of just rehashing side quests.

What they are promising this time

A pair of dev roundups from early and late 2025 - the kind that compile developer comments - painted a very confident picture: the script is complete, the finale respects the original while aiming to deliver a sense of closure the 1997 game did not fully give, and producer Yoshinori Kitase is reportedly very happy with what he has seen. Also tucked in there: Rebirth once had DLC plans, Part 3 may have DLC, and that DLC could balloon into its own release if there is enough meat on the bone.

Quick hits - what is locked, what is likely

  • Story is finished, ending mapped - Hamaguchi says the conclusion is fully set in his head.
  • Theme continues - like 'reunion' and 'bonds', Part 3 will rally around a single defining word.
  • Title decided - and, per Hamaguchi, it reflects the gameplay and overall experience.
  • Pacing tweaks - feedback from Rebirth, including the Costa del Sol bloat, is being addressed.
  • Playable internally - development is 'extremely well' along, with lots of content up and running.
  • Voice work underway - recording has started alongside ongoing builds.
  • Schedule set internally - Nomura says the release timing is already picked, just not public.
  • Target window - all signs point to 2027, with a likely reveal push in 2026.
  • DLC in play - Square previously shelved Rebirth DLC to prioritize Part 3, but is now actively weighing DLC for the finale that could even grow into a full title.
  • Future links - Nomura has said the trilogy will connect to Advent Children, which leaves room for post-game stories.

Bottom line

Square Enix is deep into the finish line stretch, and for once, the messaging is clear: the story is locked, the title is picked, the game is playable, and the team is hyper-aware of what dragged in Rebirth. The studio is keeping the date to itself for now, but 2027 is the realistic bet. If you are looking for the first hint at the title or a mood-setting teaser, keep an eye on this December - and if not then, 2026 should be when the marketing machine fully kicks in.
