Fan-Favorite Shark Saga Bites Back With Part Seven As First Details Emerge
Just when you thought the storm had passed, The Asylum is reviving Sharknado with a seventh film, Sharknado Origins, defying 2018’s supposed finale The Last Sharknado: It’s About Time.
Well, so much for 'The Last Sharknado.' The Asylum is cranking up a seventh movie, and yes, it is a prequel. Because if you are going to bring sharks back out of the sky, why not go all the way back to teen romance and a promise ring?
So what is 'Sharknado Origins'?
Variety says the new film is called 'Sharknado Origins' and it rewinds to younger versions of Fin and April — the characters made famous by Ian Ziering and Tara Reid in the first six movies. Director Anthony Ferrante, who steered every single previous entry, is back behind the camera.
'Sharknado Origins is set to introduce audiences to a teenage Fin and April. The two cross paths during a perfect beach summer, where sparks immediately fly. But just as Fin is about to seal the moment with a promise ring, the sky darkens, a massive funnel cloud forms, and sharks dramatically erupt from the ocean.'
When is this happening?
Production is expected to kick off later this year, with The Asylum currently targeting a summer 2026 release window.
Wait, wasn’t the last one the last one?
Back in 2018, the franchise wrapped with 'The Last Sharknado: It’s About Time,' which was positioned as the finale. Clearly, not so final. Now we are getting the origin story — a swing that is both unexpected and, for this series, kind of perfect.
The franchise in one quick skim
The first 'Sharknado' hit in 2013, got mixed reviews, and instantly built a cult following big enough to fuel six movies, a video game, and even a one-shot Archie Comics crossover. If you need a refresher:
- 2013: Sharknado
- 2014: Sharknado 2: The Second One
- 2015: Sharknado 3: Oh Hell No!
- 2016: Sharknado: The 4th Awakens
- 2017: Sharknado 5: Global Swarming
- 2018: The Last Sharknado: It’s About Time
Who is making it?
This is The Asylum, the same outfit behind the original run. They also produced Syfy’s 'Z Nation' and creature features like 'Ape vs. Monster.' Ferrante returning is the big swing here — if anyone knows how to orchestrate airborne sharks and deadpan one-liners, it’s him.
So, to sum up: teen Fin, teen April, a summer romance, a promise ring, and then the sky starts throwing sharks again. The seventh time’s the charm, or at least the seventh time’s the prequel.
