Middle-earth is expanding with The Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum — but don’t expect a Tauriel comeback. The Hobbit alum Evangeline Lilly says she wasn’t asked back.

The Lord of the Rings is gearing up for another big-screen detour with The Hunt for Gollum. One quick update before anyone gets their hopes up: a familiar elf from The Hobbit is sitting this one out.

Evangeline Lilly says she is not in The Hunt for Gollum

Evangeline Lilly told fans she will not be returning as Tauriel in the new movie. The confirmation came via a direct reply to a fan on Instagram who asked if her character might pop up again, especially since she has called Tauriel a dream gig in the past.

'Sorry to disappoint, but I wasn't invited.'

Lilly added that she did stop by during prep in New Zealand to see the team and had a good time reconnecting. So, friendly vibes, zero screen time.

A quick Tauriel refresher

Lilly joined Middle-earth in The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug and returned in The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies. Tauriel, an elven warrior, was created for the films and does not appear in J.R.R. Tolkien's The Hobbit. Peter Jackson directed that trilogy, which hit theaters from 2012 to 2014 as a prequel to The Lord of the Rings. The story followed Bilbo Baggins helping a band of dwarves reclaim their homeland, and the box office responded in a big way. The final chapter, The Battle of the Five Armies, also hauled in hundreds of millions worldwide.

What we know about The Hunt for Gollum

  • Release date: set for December 17, 2027, in theaters worldwide.
  • Timeline: slotted between The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring.
  • Cast: reportedly includes Kate Winslet, Elijah Wood, Ian McKellen, and Andy Serkis.
  • Scope: another expansion of Tolkien's world on the big screen, threading new story between the existing trilogies.

Lilly's absence suggests the film isn't chasing unfinished business from the elf corner of The Hobbit movies. Given the title, that tracks. Still, interesting to hear she dropped by set and said hi. Middle-earth stays small even when the movies get big.
