Carla Espinosa actress Judy Reyes pulls back the curtain on the Scrubs revival, revealing fresh behind-the-scenes moments and why the original cast finally said yes to a reunion.

Sacred Heart is about to reopen its doors. Nearly 17 years after the original run signed off, Scrubs is back, and the timing tracks: Bill Lawrence has been on a heater with Ted Lasso and Shrinking, which has a lot of folks either rediscovering Scrubs or realizing for the first time that he created it. A fresh dose of JD daydreams and Cox rants? Hard to argue with that.

The reunion playbook

The core cast did not jump in blind. Judy Reyes says the deciding factor was simple: everyone shows up, and Bill Lawrence leads from the front.

"That was the stipulation for all of us to be a part of it: we had to be together, all five of us, with our guest stars, and with Bill Lawrence. Once we had that, you feel a kind of safety. Then Bill delivered the script, and we read it — it is funny, right?"

That tracks with why this show worked in the first place. Get the band back together, put Lawrence in the driver seat, and aim for character-first comedy again.

Chasing a 2026 pulse

This revival is built for longtime fans and the crowd that found the show after it ended. Reyes says the energy clicked early.

"We did a table read that was fire, to use the kids lingo. The energy was electric. People hung out after, took pictures, talked about how excited they were, and we knew we had something."

Call it a vibe check passed. The early critical snapshot backs it up: the new season sits at 87% on Rotten Tomatoes right now, with reviewers responding to how it keeps the original charm while updating the voice for 2026. A recurring note: it feels like the cast is here because they care about these characters, not because someone waved a check.

What to watch for

Reyes was not in season 9, and this revival reportedly wipes that year off the whiteboard. Whether the show winks at that or lets it fade into the medical waste bin is one of the curiosities going in.

  • Premiere: Feb 25 on ABC and Hulu
  • Who is back: Zach Braff as John 'JD' Dorian, Donald Faison as Christopher Turk, Sarah Chalke as Elliot Reid, Judy Reyes as Carla Espinosa, John C. McGinley as Dr. Perry Cox

Between Lawrence’s recent hot streak and a cast that clearly missed each other, the ingredients are there. Now it is on the show to prove that lightning can strike twice in the same hospital.
