Everybody Hates Chris: Why Did It End After Season 4 Despite 98% on RT?
The reason was actually quite logical.
Everybody Hates Chris was released in 2005. The author of its idea is comedian Chris Rock, who once started with stand-up comedy and now is one of the most popular Hollywood stars.
Based on his life, four seasons of the show were filmed, imbued with the nostalgic atmosphere of the 80s and telling about the childhood and youth of the future star. To be more precise, Everybody Hates Chris is a pseudo-biography, because many events, facts, names and dates in this story are fictitious.
What Is Everybody Hates Chris About?
Chris and his family have moved to a new neighborhood in Brooklyn and are slowly settling in. He has a younger brother, who is taller and more popular with the girls, and a younger sister, who is his father's favorite. Father Julius works several jobs, often on the night shift, so the children are not allowed to make noise when they come home from school.
Even though his father works a lot, the family often does not have enough money, so his mother has to save. Chris goes to a good school where he is the only black student, which makes it difficult for him to make friends. His only friend, Greg, only made friends with him because for a while bullies were forbidden to approach Chris.
Everybody Hates Chris Was a Hit with Viewers
You could have made a boring drama out of this, but let's not forget that the initiator of the series was Chris Rock. Chris was a producer, sometimes a director, and read the voice-over text in his own name. In 2006 the show was nominated for a Golden Globe, but unfortunately the award went to Desperate Housewives.
Although the show has not received the award, it has received something more important – the love of the audience. Currently, Everybody Hates Chris has a 96% from critics and 98% from viewers on Rotten Tomatoes.
Why Did the Show End After Season 4?
So why did the show end after the fourth season when the ratings clearly allowed the creators to continue the story?
Chris Rock himself admitted that Everybody Hates Chris was a show about his childhood – the story of his childhood and the end of Season 4 coincided, so there was nothing special to tell and the series ended logically.
Everybody Hates Chris' Sequel Is On the Way
But now we know that there are still stories to tell. Comedy Central has announced the premiere date for the animated series Everybody Still Hates Chris, a sequel to the cult 2000s sitcom.
Everybody Still Hates Chris will premiere on September 25th. The show's creators transferred the story to an animated format. Everything else remains the same: Chris Rock will tell stories about his life, and the characters will be voiced by actors from the 2000s series.
