Every Targaryen in A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms: Where They Fit on the Family Tree

A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms is riding into a Targaryen-ruled Westeros, and the dragonlords’ family tree is wilder than ever. Meet the new royals and trace their blood ties to the power players of Game of Thrones and House of the Dragon.
We are back in Westeros, and yes, the Targaryens are still everywhere. HBO's A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms drops us into a moment when the dragonlords are running the show and their family tree looks like it needs its own atlas. If you watched Game of Thrones and House of the Dragon, this one sits in the same family saga: HotD happens about a century before GoT, and this new series bridges the gap with some very familiar bloodlines.
Why this matters for the timeline
A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms follows Ser Duncan the Tall and his squire, a kid named Egg who is way more important than he looks. The Targaryens we meet here are direct ancestors of people you know from GoT and HotD, and their titles shift as quickly as their loyalties. It is all connected, and in a few cases, surprisingly so.
The Targaryens (and company) you need to know
- Aegon V Targaryen ('Egg'): The show is setting him up for a big arc. In the trailer, Egg is squiring for Ser Duncan the Tall, the series' main character. Under the bowl haircut is a prince: he is the son of Maekar I Targaryen, a direct descendant of Rhaenyra and Daemon's line from House of the Dragon, the future grandfather of Aerys II 'the Mad King,' and therefore Daenerys Targaryen's great-grandfather. He is also the younger brother of Maester Aemon of the Night's Watch, a major presence in Game of Thrones.
- Aerion Targaryen: Egg's brother and another descendant of Rhaenyra and Daemon. History remembers him as Aerion Brightflame, a man who wore a helmet stylized with flames shooting out of it. He is Daenerys's great-granduncle.
- Daeron Targaryen: One of Egg's older brothers. He is Maekar I's eldest son and, at this point in the story, the heir with the clearest path to the Iron Throne.
- Maekar I Targaryen: Father to Egg, Aerion, Daeron, and Aemon. In this era he is the brother of the reigning king, which puts his children in a very interesting spot succession-wise.
- Dyanna Dayne: Maekar I's wife and the mother of all his children. With the Dayne surname, she likely connects to House Dayne of Starfall — yes, think Ser Arthur Dayne from Game of Thrones — which means the Targaryens and the Daynes are distant kin. Westeros is small like that.
- Baelor Targaryen: Serving as Hand of the King to his elder brother, King Daeron II Targaryen, when A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms kicks off. He is also Maekar's older brother and thus Egg's uncle. Important note for the lore sticklers: this is not Baelor the Blessed.
That is the lineup. It is a tight little cluster of royals whose choices echo straight into Game of Thrones. And if you are wondering how a squire named Egg ends up mattering this much — that is the fun of this story.
